advise building long range rig

So I have a Savage axis in a 243.

I plan on building a 6.5 Sherman for a primary deer gun/ back up elk gun.

Only thing I don't know about yet is a source for a high quality low weight stock. If anyone has a lead on this let me know.

I plan on running a 25 inch barrel in a Sporter contour as I won't shot more than 2 or 3 times after I have it all sighting in and a load developed.

What action do you want to use? Sounds interesting.
For hunting rifles I prefer a stock.. modified stock.
Shaved, stiffened, bedded. I like my blind box mag.

I have a Savage axis 2 and a Stevens 200 that I could use.
But as this is a axis forum I was asking about the axis.
The problem I have ran into is the stock. I have to be able to pillar bed it and it has to be light. I am shooting for a sub 7.5 pound rifle with 4 rounds a sling and scope.

That is why I was looking for leads for a strong light stock. I am ok if I have to go to different bottom metal but I do like a detachable mags.

The factory stock is a youth stock so it wouldn't work for my needs going forward. A factory wood stock might work but I was hopping for a light composite stock if it is out there.

I have an axis in a chassis already but that is too heavy with the 22 inch 6.5 creedmoor barrel to try to carry up the mountain.

Sounds like a lot of money to do that.

Imo I would find a donor action. Long 110 action with the correct bolt head.
Then order a take off stock from eBay or something that fits your bill.

IMO an axis is meant to be the axis that was built from the factory.

I think you will be happier with a from scratch build.

I find the axis to be a great build platform and believe that other than the unfortunate recoil lug it’s geometry lends to an inherently more accurate platform. I’ve done more 110s due to the fact that sub $200 270s are a dime a dozen around here. Please explain what

I'd go with something more applicable, unless you really like messing with rifles.

Savage uses a wood stock for their lightweight hunter (5.5lb rifle) so you might consider that route. Boyd's has a featherweight thumbhole and classic that might work for you. Bell&Carlson says their hunter stock is 2.5lb. McMillan says their's are less than 2.5lb. Don't know if these two are available for an Axis.

For less expensive I'd consider a factory stock with suitable modifications.

My 7 rem mag wears a wood stock my 35 whelen wears a composite the 35 is lighter with a longer heavy weight barrel. That is why I would like a composite stock as 5 to 7 miles a day elk hunting is common for were I like to go and I am not used to the altatude of co. So every oz counts.

Truthfully I have 3 mosin actions built 6.5/54r improved, 7.62x54r bond with a 308 bore and a 9.3x54r ,two k98s one in a 350 rem mag one in a 35/300 win mag and a Stevens 200 in a 35 whelen that will soon be a 35 Sherman.

I like the work, I like the results, and I have a lot of free time in the winter.

Not a lot of options in the light weight options. Boyd's are good but heavy. If weight was the deciding factor for me I would use a composite axis stock and stiffen thee forend and pillar it. Othe than lack of stock options I like building on the axis platform

If every ounce counts then ask McMillan if they will cut one of their new carbon fiber stocks for an Axis. IIRC they weigh in at 7oz.
