Tried it magnum bolt head is longer it seems countproductive to engage less threads on a magnum round. Or maybe I'm overthinking it, larger lug engagement.

Your question was does the bolt fit. You did not state that it was a magnum. It does fit . If you have a factory Savage Short Action Push Feed Magnum(SAPFM) Bolt Head it is longer in the lug by .125" over the 308 size bolt head. That means you get 2.5 threads less thread engagement in the action. No big deal.

What many guys do is they order the PTG Savage magnum bolt head that is the same length as the 308. They do this because they do not have the short action SAPFM bolt. They are converting a standard bolt and they do not want to purchase the SAPFM firing pin.
