Hey All,

I just built a custom .243 Win. I used a savage 110 action and have an Apache barrel on it. Barrel length is 28" with a 1:8 twist.

The idea is to be able to shoot further distances with a lighter caliber.

I am going to start working up a load for this. I'm planning on shooting a 100gr or 107gr bullet out of this - hence the faster twist rate.

What i'm looking for is powder recommendations, before i load my reloading safe up with different powders. Typically i use 4350, and was going to try some loads with it, but since i have a longer barrel, with a faster twist, i didn't know if this is the most efficient powder.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

H4350 all day long....running 108 ELD-M on top of 41.3gr. Gets me 3050fps from a 27", 8 twist, 3R barrel. I have tried 105/107/108 bullets with both H4350 and IMR-4350 over the years and all have shot well.

ThanksI would think H4350 as well, that works excellent in every 6mm and all my 6.5s.. not much of a difference.. if it were me, I'd definitely start with H4350 and work it, I bet you'll find what your looking for

IMR 4831 for 90 gr or more. Harder to tune then IMR4350. For 85 gr to 68 gr Bergers, IMR 4350 , but need to run at or near max for the 68 gr. & 70 Sierra.

If i was younger than my current 75 years, i would try some of the new IMR powders. IMR 4451.
The main features of the Enduron series are copper fouling eliminator, insensitivity to temperature changes, ideal loading density and being environmentally friendly.
This propellant performs comparably to Hodgdon H4350 but charge weights are materially different.

With your fast twist and heavy bullets, it should do well with slow burn rate powders. Some of the newer powder have copper erasers. Another plus on using new instead of the same old.

Cheap Bullets for fire forming or plinking. On Ammoseek search, the Speer 85 gr #1213 is a great price compared to the Sierra 85 gr #1530. The Sierra is a great bullet. The Speer is just as accurate at 100 yards from what i am seeing on target in the last few weeks Rem 600 Mohawk rifle.
How it will preform on game at long range, needs testing.

Best accuracy at 300 yds has been the Berger 90 gr match , with IMR 4831, Cci Br2 Win brass, neck turned, sorted by weight, flash hole uniformed.Redding S bushing die in Rem 40X. 1-10 twist. Under 1" 5 shot groups, some times, not always. WIND.

Loads should work just fine in a Savage.

Check out the new Hodgdon burn rate chart. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2018/01/download-latest-hodgdon-imr-relative-burn-rate-chart/

The Hodgdon website lists loads for the heavies.

Now i think i need a fast twist 243 win.

You do! I built it so i could shoot lighter bullets, and -hopefully- stabilize 115gr if i wanted to.

But i'm thinking the 105ish grain bullets is my sweet spot.

Thanks guys. I'll try H4350 and IMR4831 and play with it and see how it shoots!

I started to at one time. That was about the time I started downloading some rifle loads and was using pistol powders so I wanted the whole list.

IMR-7828ssc along with a Nosler 95 Gr BT produced a group that I could cover with a dime in my 243. With the 105,107,115’s and a 28 inch barrel, you should be able to find a load that meets or exceeds mine.

For the heavies in .243 I've been using H4831sc. Another I would consider would be Hybrid 100V. Worked with various powders when building up loads for 250 Ack heavies, Hybrid 100V was a performer on that cartridge with 117's.

I have to ask. How did you get an Apache barrel?

Can't speak for the OP, but as I recall, some guy named Marion Morrison was selling some a while back. Can't be sure...

Someone here please feel free to correct me if I've got that wrong. Memory ain't what it used to be.
