Coned bolt on a Savage?? Anybody ever consider it?
Single feeding a short fat round, bullet point hits the tenon face before it starts into the chamber. So, you have to point the round up and into the chamber before you think about closing the bolt.
So, "coned bolt and barrel face"?
Only issue that comes to mind is the extractor slot in the bolt head.
Lugs are 0.451 deep, only about 0.165 of the extractor slot that isn't taken up, being used.
Maybe taper the back of the extractor to match the angle of the (coned) bolt head without getting to the ball hole?
And this would be \on the smaller bolt head. (.223 size) Not enough extra meat on a larger bolt face. (.308 size) And this is for single feeding.

I see coned bolts mostly on custom competition actions where you see long pointed bullets or single loading. Often with an M16 type extractor.

Consider this. Short fat case with a pointed bullet. (or even a longer case) You're single feeding so you drop the round in the solid bottom action opening. You start to close the bolt and the bullet hits the area around the chamber opening, rather than starting into the chamber.:mad:
You know what a coned bolt looks like? The bolt head is tapered back and the tenon of the barrel is tapered to match the bolt face. Like a pocket or funnel the bolt fits into. So, the tapered part of the barrel tenon acts like a ramp that the bullet hits and starts it "up and into" the chamber. Look up "coned bolt" and you'll get the picture.

Not exactly but close. Too much other stuff on the bolt head.
Look for a Remington coned bolt. The barrel tenion is tapered like a funnel and acts as a ramp for the round and the bolt face fits into it.

BINGO!! Sure is pretty. Only issue would be the Savage extractor groove. Looks like .010 to .015 empty space before you get to the back edge of the extractor. And, the extractor has to move and be able to pop over the case rim. So, the back edge of the extractor would need to be tapered to match the face of the coned portion of the bolt face and STILL be able to move in the barrel cone pocket.
A lathe, a couple of extra Savage bolt heads to work on and a couple of beers. Should be able to come up with something? Here, hold my beer and watch this.:cool::cool:

My thought is you need the chamber reamer too. The exposed case head dimension should not be increased.
Also after headspace is achieved the breach face could be "marked & milled for extra extractor clearance.

Single-shot follower will solve the feeding issue.

Been thinking about getting a few of the SSS single shot loading ramps, how well do they work? Any first hand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Only got one on a center feed action. Clean everything real good. Brake parts cleaner does the trick.;) Fit it, probably snug. (that'd good) Work the bolt to make sure the lugs don't hit and works smooth. I use epoxy or bedding compound to stick it in place. A piece of clear tape over it keeps it in place.
My others are either single shot actions or fitted with Score High Followers that fit on top of the factory mag followers. A single shot action is the BOMB!! :cool:
