Savage 112V J Series rebuild to 6BRA

This was originally a 243win. The original barrel was junk. So I rebarreled it to 6BRA. Had the bolt handle threaded for a OS knob. The recoil lug was double pinned to the receiver. We pinned it at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position along with the receiver face being trued and the bolt lugs where lapped and I trued/recut the bolt face.

The contour of the barrel duplicates the original Savage Varmint. The rifling is 5R and 1-7 twist.

The original stock was bedded but poorly done and done with no pillars. So I carefully ground out all of the bedding and we pillar bedded the stock.

The rifle has the original trigger that I just retuned.

Scope base is a EGW 20moa and the scope is a older Weaver T20x.

For got the scope rings are Seekins Precision 1” rings.

My first Savage was/is a 110V in .223. I'll have it till the day I die.
It has been a "test bed" for a BUNCH of different calibers.
From 17 VHA on up to .308 and a bunch in between.
Got a couple of single shot actions I build on.
Had issues trying to find scope mounts that fit ALL the holes on the 110V.
Either the mount was too long, too short or some of the mounting holes were covered up.
Ended up having a "Custom Mount" built that is the proper length and ALL the holes line up.
3 or 4 different mounts, cut up, repositioned and welded together to make a one piece mount.
Looks like factory made and works like a champ!!

Mine also. Was a BVSS with a fluted 223 barrel.

My one 112v has had barrels on it in 220 Swift, 308win, 338 Lapua, 6mm Rem., and currently is in 7.5x58mm. I’ve shot it in F class matches, prairie dogging and for testing. It gets used!

In the past before anyone was making decent aftermarket scope bases for Savages I made my own but keep it as simple/less work as possible. I’d buy Picatinny scope rail blanks and just contour the bottom and put my holes in it and cut to length. No welding or piecing together etc...

Now if I have to for some guns and this includes Savages and things like 1917 Enfield...I buy a scope base from Brownells. Usually the Winchester LA model 70 post64. On the Savage I just have to add two scope holes in the back end. Yes you end up with two extra holes but for the most part you don’t see them. I’ve even milled the front radius and the back end to give me 10-20moa on the base. It’s they’re p/n 080-000-397 and works perfect for the medium/intermediate short action Savage 110’s and 112V J series type actions.

I've got an old J model medium action. EGW makes a nice 0 or 20 MOA rail for them. I screwed a Criterion 6BR barrel on it and that gun started me on the trip down the deep dark hole of benchrest shooting LOL

Very nice. That Weaver brings back fond memories of my youth.
Every thing in the family gun locker had a Weaver on it. Even
hung one on a XP-100 221 Fireball !! And that idea of going to
a 6BRA seems to be catching fire. 2 of our local club shooters
recently went that way. One gave up his 22/250, the other an
older .222 Mag.

Every thing in the family gun locker had a Weaver on it. Even
hung one on a XP-100 221 Fireball !! And that idea of going to
a 6BRA seems to be catching fire. 2 of our local club shooters
recently went that way. One gave up his 22/250, the other an
older .222 Mag.

The old Weaver optic wise might not be as good as scopes now a days but it tracks and holds zero with no issues. Yea it’s kinda funky looking being that long but that was the technology back then. So no reason to send it down the road and for just punching paper and steel targets it works just fine. Like you said back in the day a lot of guns had them on. I’ve got that 20x, 16x and two 6x older T series Weaver scopes. They work great.

it's a laser beam! One 10 shot group I put 9 rounds into a .368" at a 117 yards. The one round was me.

I've shot plenty of groups in the upper .2xx's to low .3xx's and it does it easily out to 430 yards. That's the furthest I've shot it.

A T16 Weaver was my first scope with target knobs other than Unertles. I put it on a 40xb Rem in 7 mag. in the late 70s.
At that point Leupold still didnt offer target knobs, and most of the others we have now didnt yet exist.
Also had a T6 i used in hunter class. The turrets were a bit mushy on them but otherwise a nice scope, both are still on guns.
