8mm RUM

My son and I are avid shooters but between the two of us we have no savage of any kind.
Plenty of CZ's, Mauser, TC's , and rem 700.
Here is the thing in a nut shell:
I want to build an 8mm RUM.
I have my eye on an 111 7 mm mag savage at a reasonable price.
I need to know IF this is a good candidate for such a build.
There based on a 404 Jeffrey's brass necked down as with the 300 RUM.
OR I could go an 8 mm rem mag that's based on a 375 H&H brass.
Mostly the only difference is a hair smaller brass and a band.
Anyone for sure know if the action is big enough for my plan ?
AND is there any 8mm barrels available ?
PLEASE let me know the guy with the 7 is very ready to sell.
I would hate to miss this.

If it is a stagger feed/double stack magazine then it needs modification for opening/circumference/girth.

It won't feed reliably without mods to mag. The action itself is long enough, but magaz support would require some research.

1. check out the barrel venders listed and supporting this site for your 8 mm chambering
2. See if you can get the owner of the rifle you are interested in to give you the serial ##. Then look it up on this site, That will give you the time it was built and a few other things. Also , it should tell you top / bottom bolt release, and the Mag. type
3." way up there" doesn't tell us where you are located, but the 8 RUM is going to "kill" on both ends , so consider the cost having the barrel threaded for
a break by the Bbl. maker vs having it done by a local gun smith. Feeding the 8 RUM ain't like feeding a 223.

My intro says Montana.
Thanks I'll try to get the number information and check out the barrels here too.
Thanks.
Brakes are needed on some, I do shoot a 338/378 WB and it has a brake.
I'm kind of making a collection, I have a 6 mm rem mag , a 7 mm mag and need an 8

That long of a cartridge won't fit in any of the newer centerfeed Savage rifles (well, maybe a .338 Lapua action). On the older staggered feed actions, Savage made some factory guns for a couple years (roughly 1999-2001) chambered in .300 and .338 RUM. This required lengthening the magazine port in the bottom of the action to accommodate the longer cartridge and very few were made. Finding one today to build off of would be a challenge given the very low production numbers.

Savage also offered the 116 Safari Express chambered in .375 H&H for several years in the late 90's and early/mid 2000's - all based on the staggered feed actions. Again, not a big seller and finding one today would be a challenge.

You will really want to find one of the above in a complete rifle to base your build on because finding magazine parts for the older staggered feed guns has become almost impossible in recent years.

01085 is the zip code for Savage Arms in Westfield, Mass. The SN will be on the action and start with a letter. Suggest you pay heed to J. Baker's last reply.

Serial number on the action, usually starts with a letter and then 6 numbers ie; N 531516

Nope won't work Dang it.
At $325 for the rifle mounts rings sling and a box of shells.it would have been great.

Anyone out there have a 8mm Rem Mag or a 8mm RUM they need to get rid of ?

Took a different path ...
I Found a Remington 700 BDL Long action in 8mm rem mag.
No scope, 5 boxes of factory shells and 6 boxes of once shot brass.
Shipped to my LGS $670.
Just got the notice it will be here on Monday.
Man am I pumped.
I ordered, Sierra GameKing Bullets 8mm (323 Diameter) 220 Grain Spitzer Boat Tail.
and
Barnes Triple-Shock X (TSX) Bullets 8mm (323 Diameter) 200 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail.
Not sure about powder but it looks like maybe reloaded 25.
I'm looking into a new style "limb saver"
Need scope and bases and rings.
Is a one-piece base better on big magnums?
Need a scope with a LOT of eye relief 5" maybe?
What do you think? I'm guessing it'll have a 24" barrel, I think
That's what they came with back when they were sold.
