New Boyd's stock arrived - initial thoughts

Hi everyone

Ordered a new Boyd's lightweight thumbhole stock in forest camo for my Savage 116. It just arrived and wanted to share info and initial thoughts....

As background, I ordered this under the "Rapid Fire program" and it cost $115 plus shipping. Compared the information on the rapid fire stock to a stock "built" through the menu, and the dimensional info was the same even through the model number was different. Here is how it showed up in the shopping cart, so that everyone knows specifically what was ordered:

Initial thoughts on the stock:

Color is mostly what I expected. The green is a touch lighter than the pictures on the site and what I saw when I searched online, but overall happy with the color.
Exterior finish is smooth and even.
Recoil pad is the Boyd's version and is firmer than I expected - will probably swap at some point
The overall inlet area was not sanded or "finished" - don't know if I expected it to be or not - but there are some small areas of clean up that will need to be done. Not a big deal and not something that bothers me.


One major negative - the Stock contains checkering that was not listed in the description and is a type that isn't even shown as an option on the web site. I am going to guess that this was either a custom stock ordered and never delivered/cancelled, or something of that nature. I am calling this a negative because the web site did not mention any checkering at all and I feel that it should have been mentioned. NOTE - just realized that the picture in the shopping cart shows the checkering and I did not catch it. That being said, the page for the item did not mentioned checkering.

I will provide more info on fit when I get some time to install the stock, but wanted to provide initial thoughts.

I have a similar one (same colors and fishscale, but different layout) and a Pachmayr recoil pad. Cost a LOT more than $115! Your layout pattern is listed as "Spades" and the texture is "Fishscale". It is in the options for the stock (I just ran through the menu to be sure).

You do realize the "Rapidfire" program is to sell "as is" orders that were not completed or returned and at a substantial discount? That is the risk for the price savings. The image you included from the Boyd's site does show the engraving. There are other stocks with engraving that is shown but not mentioned in the description.

I appreciate you providing more info. I actually did not realize the Rapidfire program included returned items. I presumed that it was two things - orders cancelled after initial purchase or overruns of some kind.

I was/am confused about the checkering - when I went to their design center, they do not show the "Spades" pattern, so did not realize that was a "stock" option. I also admit is was my bad for not seeing it in the picture. Not an excuse, but I would have also expected Boyds to state in the description that it had it.

All good - its mine either way so intend to use it. The checkering feels good, stock looks good, and it was much cheaper than doing the "build your stock" option. Hopefully it fits as intended.

No worries! I Brownell glassed and aluminum pillared mine. VERY happy with the stock. Suits the shorter weight action very well.

Wow, those are some crazy waves in the lamination.

Is that common?

I can't even imagine how that would happen.

It happened on purpose. Boyd's used some wavy blanks on some models. The boards are laid up that way.

Yep. Gives the wood more interesting (or "camo") qualities than a plain flat laminate would. Mostly personal taste, I guess.

Comparing Stumpkiller's to mine, the wavy laminate definitely changes the look.

Yes. There's no better or worse, just the wavy laminations make smaller oval features in the pattern. When I proudly showed my "new" restocked action to THE ADMIRAL (my wife) her first words were "that's ugly".

In her defense her father was a cabinetmaker and natural wood grain is the thing rifles out to wear. She loves the flame walnut on my flintlock fowler (as do I).

But here is the BEST thing about bedded and pillared laminated stocks. Deer season is three weeks away and I had a day off to make a final sighter walk to my backyard range. This was my first shot from a cold barrel at 100 yards last Friday. I switched targets after seeing this in the spotting scope. Wonderful! Sadly, no, not something I can count on every time. But boy was I happy! This one went on the wall in the workshop. As the sporter weight barrel warms it drifts left. But this is my hunting rifle and the first shot is the only one that matters. ;-)

Never knew about this "rapid fire" program. I spent some time looking through it and they do have some very nice prices on the stocks, but boy do they need a search feature. They need some way to narrow it down by make, model, or action length.

I love the Boyd’s stock.And the spade engraving.. It sucks for me i’m a lefty. that shoots righty guns. So thumb hole has to be backwards for me. And cheek support has to be on the right side. The cool thing is Boyd’s says no problem. They can do it all for me. I think i would get that engraving . very nice

I know this thread is old but, make sure you piller the stocks.

I own 2, boyds laminated stocks and both have cracked (split between the laminates).

Not a big deal if you can piller the stocks yourself but my Accu trigger would not set and needed to be recocked.

I notice that if I backed off the rear receiver screw 1/4 turn it wuld work again.

Inspected the stock and it was cracking causing the Accu trigger to press against the inside of the stock.

Piller and bedded receiver, issues should go away.

Note: When I pillar bedded I used 1/2" aluminum rod and the pillar itself interfered with the trigger mechanics. I had to file a radiused notch (in addition to the machined flat) in the pillar to allow the bolt release lever to pivot and release the firing pin.
