Guy has a 22"stainless Savage factory barrel in 308. It a heavy barrel from a Model 12 and has a non-removable muzzle brake...ie. brake is part of the barrel not an addition. When were these made? He says it is unfired and wants $100 for it...whatdaya think?

I'd have it chopped down to 18-21" (whatever your fancy) and put a real brake on it other than those noise/dust maker ports... $100 is good though and it's a 308, so they go a long way!

Is the barrel factory roll stamped? If so, what Model # is on it?

I can't recall Savage ever offering a fixed brake setup like that. They did have a Model 116 FSK back in the late 90's with a 22" BBL that had a fixed brake, but the holes were staggered rather than in-line like those and it wasn't offered in .308 Win.

The only models I can think of that would have a heavy 308 barrel would be the 12 FVSS, 12 BVSS and maybe the 12 VLP and none of them came with a brake of any kind. It also looks like the barrel has a blasted finish rather than the typical factory finish - might be another indicator it's not entirely "factory" as claimed.

Are you certain it is not removable? Is the bore of the brake rifled or smooth? Can you see a gap in the bore if you look down the muzzle with a light? Most model 10 barrels were black or blue. Something could have been done to the OD to hide the transition. Just a thought.

Are you certain it is not removable?

Yep.

Almost ready to spring for it just to find out what the h..l it is. Well you know "almost"

A 12 twist 308? All the 30-cals are 1-10" twist except the Palma rifle, which is a 1-13" twist and no brake.

Let me dig out the catalogs - Savage offered a Silhouette model back in the late 70's or early 80's that could have been a 12 twist, but I know they didn't have a brake.

Edit: Nevermind! Being marked Model 12 means it is 1998 or newer so it couldn't have been the old Silhouette model.

I believe the 308 FTR is a 12 twist also Jim.

Here's what I can tell you for absolute certainty - it's not of a rifle that was ever cataloged which means it was either a custom order or a special run for a distributor.

As I said above, Savage only ever offered a non-adjustable ported barrel like that on the Model 16/116 FSK, and the short-action version would have only been offered with it in 1998 as that's the year the short-actions came back. In 1999 Savage came out with the adjustable AK brake and the 16/116 FSK became the 16/116FSAK from then on out.

Still, the porting you show in your first pic doesn't match Savage's pattern of ports as seen in this pic from the 1998 catalog. That leads me to believe it wasn't ported at the factory.

You are correct, but that would be a large-shank barrel (as would the Palma come to think of it)

Really appreciate all the replies guys! I am wondering if it was at one time a 12 FVSS that someone cut down, bead blasted and did the porting on it. In any case I will stay away from this one.
