Good evening. I picked up a Savage 1899 today in .30-.30 cal. It’s in kinda rough shape but it still shoots good. On the crown of the barrel is printed “Manufactured By Savage Arms Company, Utica, N.Y. USA. Pat Feb 7, 1893, July 25, 1898, Oct 2, 1899, May 25, 1909, June 1, 909. (909 is correct), Left side of the barrel is “Savage Hi-Pressure Steel, Model 1899, Left side of the barrel at the receiver “30-30”. Barrel is 20”. Serial Number is 126777. Still has the U-hook for the saddle ring. (Ring is missing). Stock does not have the raised pointed sides like my other Savage 99 from the 1951( I think date is correct). This Gun shows to be from 1912. I would like to know if it truly is an F model 1899. And did I get soaked at $250? Also rear sight is broken. I’m not allowed to post pictures.

See this thread on how to post photos: http://www.savageshooters.com/showthread.php?63647-How-to-post-pictures-(All-Members)

At $250 for a 99 that goes bang I don't think you can go wrong. Even if it were just a fairly complete parts gun you'd probably come out ahead at that price. I'm not a 99 buff so can't help ya out on the other stuff, but Mad Dog should be finding his way out of the deep dark hallows of the Ontario asphalt plant soon and he'll be able to tell you exactly what you've got. In the meantime there's a few other fairly knowledgeable 99 guys around here that might be able to help.

I rechecked the SN. It was actually 136777 and that makes the build date at 1913. Thanks.

Sure sounds like an F. They were made until 1920. At $250 my wallet would have made a sonic boom coming out of my pocket!!

Thanks Big Al1. The metal will clean up, but the wood is cracked and has a hole drilled side to side through the stock and the forearm for (I suppose) a strap, and also has chips knocked off at all the edges. This gun has had a hard life. Any other info to make sure of its model being an F would be appreciated. I’m not sure whether to look for better wood or leave it as is. The only history I can find on the gun is that it came from a preacher in deep east Texas.

Ahhh if guns ould talk, I'm sure they history lesson would be amazing!! That's why I love the old timers with charactor!!
Your description was spot on for an F. Look for a picture on line for an old one, but the ones made after 1920 look a lot different.
