Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about getting my first Savage. I'm shooting FTR now but want to try longer distances - up to 1300 yards. I'm thinking about a Savage 12 VLP in .300 WSM.

Does anyone use them for precision shooting? If so, how accurate are they and what bullet are they able to handle? I'm thinking Berger 215 as it seem a minimum for that distance. What I'm worried about is the short action (will it handle long COALs to reach the lands with VLD bullets?) and barrel thermal capacity/diameter - is it really 1" at the muzzle?

Thanks in advance,
Michal

MichalI like 6.5 CM.. it's been doing 1300 easy at only about +6 mil in my vortex and significantly less recoil.. I'm sure plenty will disagree lol

I'm with Ted as far as recoil goes. If you are not in competition and can use a brake, the G7 numbers are superior in the 300 and the 7mm's and will buck the big winds at that distance and further with the right bullet. The 6.5's do it cheaper though.

If you buying it with the intention of upgrading the barrel at a later date, why wait. Actions are cheap, barrels are good and there are lots of options for a long range gun in the stock department.

I want 300WSM for bucking the big wind with 215gr bullets. I plan to use factory barrel and thats why I'm wondering if it can handle it. Where I live swapping a barrell is a difficult and costly procedure...

Where I live swapping a barrell is a difficult and costly procedure...Savages are one of the simplest barrels to swap.. just need action wrench, barrel nut wrench, barrels vice, go/no go gauges and torque wrench

I'm based in Europe, nothing gun related is easy here, swapping aby barrell is at least 1000$ plus a lot of hassle...

My 300 WSM with a 212 ELD-X at 2840 FPS at the muzzle is just a little better than my 6.5 Creedmoor with 140 ELD-M at the same speed. If you really want better, it is amazing how much better the 6.5 PRC is, and the factory ammo is relatively cheap. I am throwing a 147 ELD-M at 3040 fps at the muzzle and it is really flat shooting and bucks the wind great!
At 1300 yards here is the drops and 10mph wind in MILS.
300 WSM 12.1 Up and 2.4 W
6.5 Creedmoor 12.3Up and 2.5 W
6.5 PRC 9.9 Up and 2W

I missed the part where you are in Europe. A 300 WSM with a brake is a manageable rifle, and just stock mine are great shooters. One is just a touch over 1/2 MOA with hand loads, and the other is around 1/4 moa. The best part is that they are both hunting rifles, a model 12 Bear Hunter and a model 11. I can only imagine that a target rifle will be as good or better.

Because of the rules, it has to be 300WSM (F Class, no brake). Do You shoot 12 VLP? If it handles 212 ELDX, it should be OK with 215 Berger...

With your cost, in Europe go with a 300wm
Find a surplus of 190gn smk Ball ammo and order it all.

It’s not 100yd line work but really shows up at 600yds + 1400—

No one shoots precision with this rifle, really?

I'm not clear as to the premise of your question.
You said you shoot F-T/R, and "because of the rules, it has to be .300 WSM".

F-T/R is limited to .223 and .308; and "open" class allows any chambering. To what "rules", are you referring?

Generally, the short mag is more suited to lighter bullets; the "long" mag has the case capacity to push the heavies, and the length needed so that you're not stuffing these long VLD's too far into the case- further robbing powder capacity.

You might get better information with some clarification.
