Would anyone care to recommend some factory ammo for the 223 Axis? I know handloads will almost always be the best for accuracy but as cheap as the 223 is I don't know if it pays. No doubt it is interesting and could be as interesting as shooting itself but for now I will be using factory. It would be nice to find something that shoots well and is reasonably priced but people in hell want ice water too. I also know some ammo works well in one gun and in the exact same model may not be the best in another but surely there are some that seem to be a safe bet.

Any advice appreciated.

The 50gr V-Max Fiocchi has proven to be good.

The Black Hills Remanufactured .223 52gr Match HP is some excellent ammo, and supposedly still in production, but I haven't seen any in probably a decade.

The old Hornady 52gr Steel Match HP was really good, but it's been discontinued for a couple years now.

Have had pretty good luck with the PMC Bronze 55gr PSP load so far, though my experience with it is more limited (100-160 rounds or so).

Never had any of the 62gr ammo shoot worth a hill of beans in any rifle.

The 69-77gr stuff is long-range match ammo and for most guys is a waste of money unless you're shooting out past 300 yards regularly. The lighter 50-55gr bullets at the higher velocities will shoot just about as flat as the heavier high BC bullets out to 300 yards.

Should also note I rarely ever buy FMJ rifle ammo due to where I live and how I may use it (varmint hunting). Unfortunately most of the cheaper .223 ammo is loaded with FMJ pills.

This is the most accurate factory load I’ve bought for the 100yd line work and plates to 300yds

Federal Gold Medal Mach is a good benchmark ammo.

Get a box of each and see how it shoots. If you only need 2" groups then just about any of it will do. If you wanr 1/2" groups then you'll have to spend some money on the premium stuff. And that is why I handload for it. I could not afford to shoot 2000rnds of Fed Gold Medal Match ammo :)
