I will be taking my Savage 116 30-06 on an Elk hunt this fall and am looking at all the stock options other than the current nice piece of Walnut it wears now. What would your recommendations be for the strongest, lightweight, all weather hunting stock? Its a 116 centerfeed bottom bolt release. Not interested in laminate or any bench style stocks.

Appreciate the help, Thanks.

My goto hunting stock (within my budget) is the B & C medalist classic sporter. Full bedding block, available short & long actions, about 2.4 lbs. And under $300.
Tough; mine has been in numerous hunts in MT, WY mountains as well as tree stand and brush pounding in MN & WI.

Hard to beat a McMillan or Manners, especially if lightweight is a necessity, but you're looking at big $$ and a long wait to get it. If you're on a time constraint and don't want to spend a ton of money, the B&C's Sporter stock is the way to go. Not super light, but not overly heavier either - roughly about the same weight as an AccuStock.

Thanks guys. I would really like a Manners or McMillan. Have liked all my bell and Carlson stocks I’ve had in the past as well. I think either way it would be cutting it to close for this hunt after thinking about it. I’ll just roll with that walnut this year and revisit this after.

Manners is no longer building long action savage stocks. McMillan will only build them with heavy fill. No more edge fill.

I like my bc sporter stocks a lot.

Stockade is with looking at. Good stock.

I put a B&C M40 on my 30-06 and really like the ergonomics of it.

Stockades are great stocks, for a hunter I don't think they can be beat.

Is Bell & Carlson making any stock for the Long Action bottom bolt other than the sporter?

Manners is no longer building long action savage stocks.

I'm not convinced this is so. If you go to the builder page on most stocks it does not show up but if you sear "Savage" you will find several.

From the manners website.

And yes Stockade is worth looking at. Get it finished or at least ready to paint.

Yes they are still building stocks for short action savages. No longer building LONG action stocks. Call them if you like.

I stand corrected. I completely overlooked where you typed long action. Do they make them as blanks without the inlet. That would cost you but.....

are you only considering a rifle? I talked to an old hunter I know, he says that if you go for a hare, for example, then you can limit yourself to a gun. Well, it already affects how good a shooter you are.

Well I had my chuckle for the day.....

@Robinhood I know this post is years old but, what specs do I need when looking to talk to a manufacture or build a stock. I have a Savage 110 Creedmoor and am looking at stocks but want to get the right information. It has a detachable magazine also?
