My wife wants a bolt action rifle in 243 or 6mm creedmoor(leaning towards 243). She needs a 12” LOP so I’m leaning towards a chassis build with a Luth AR stock.

She loves the accutrigger and likes the looks of stainless, and must have a threaded barrel for her suppressor.

Any recommendations or comments are greatly appreciated.

Front rifle is a 12FV action in an Oryx chassis, with X-Caliber barrel in .243 with 1:8 twist. You looking for an out of the box solution or do you want to build from the ground up?

Either works. However, your build in 243 with 1:8 twist interests me as I will be able to reload the heavier wieghts.

Yep...the 8 twist lets me shoot 108gr ELD rounds with ease..

What is the reason you are shying away from the 6 mm Creedmoor?

I have 400 pieces of Laupa brass and dies for the 243.

I built my 243 using a Criterion barrel with 1/8" twist and dropped it into a choate stock with aluminum bedding block. At 600 yards using a 105 grain handload I get groups of 4.7 inches from the bench. Not bragging groups but not bad either.

That's a good reason. haha. I don't think any major gun manufacturer makes a barrel with a twist faster than 1:9 so to shoot the heavier, longer bullets you are going to have to go with a barrel replacement. My Ruger American Predator seems to be stabilizing the Hornady 103 grain ELD-X bullets which will get you to 1000 yards supersonic. I'm not sure what speed I'm pushing them yet but I am figuring 2900-3000 fps. More range time will tell.

I believe you are making a fine choice. 243 Win is an outstanding cartridge & is overlooked by many. Just as the 260 Rem holds a slight advantage over 6.5CM, so too will the 243, with its 308 parent case, over 6cm. The 308 family based cartridges give the reloaded the best velocity performance/short action ability in a standard, non magnum, case. (Before all the CM fans come out in droves to attack me, I have no problem with either the 6 or 6.5 CM. Simply stating facts!)

The Oryx chassis offers the best “bang for buck” among chassis currently, and are a fantastic design. MDT also offers other options, although at a higher cost. XLR is another contender offering fantastic systems on par with the higher priced MDT line. For those wanting to go all out, MPA(Masterpiece Arms), offers what many believe to be the highest quality chassis available. Be prepared, however, to shell out quite a bit more than even the higher priced offerings from MDT & XLR! There are many others available...Cadex, JP AMCS, KRG, Ashbury Precision(APO), Drake Accosiates to name some. So a search & your time will give you the info you need to choose the perfect system for your needs. Good luck!

I don't see a difference opinion as an attack Dave. I also don't agree that the 243 has an advantage over the 6mm CM. The CM shooting a 115gr projectile at over 2900fps is at no disadvantage with a 243 imo. Anyway I would still pick a 243 cause I just like em mo betta. Now if I wanted to
get really serious about 6mm...it would definitely be a Dasher.

"You're not entitled to your own facts":p.

Yep. The Creedmoor is more efficient case design and allows the heavies to hang out further. The 6 and 6.5 x 47L's are like that as well.

LOL! Let’s not stop there! The 6mm BR Norma has the LEAST case capacity, and is the shortest(and therefore most efficient) case.. So it must be best-ist, right? LOL! I’m joking WBM!

The 243 can drive the 115 DTACS at over 3150FPS! Facts indeed. Remember I said to “The reloaded”. For those who grab over the counter ammo, Creedmoor is the best option. If you don’t see up to 250fps MORE as an advantage I’m not sure what more I could say. You are correct. I agree a different opinion isn't attacking. That was joking. But nothing I said was factually wrong.

More powder capacity will always be at an advantage of driving projectiles faster.

Ah B.S. Dave. You switch horses like a pony express rider. A factory 1-9.25 twist Savage 243 will not shoot la 115DTAC anywhere except a keyhole at 200l. But a factory 1-8 Savage 6mm CM will. That was the point all along.

Tex if your thinking about a fast twist, one of the members has a Criterion for sale.
