since this is basically a "new " cartridge ( 3.82 long 300 win mag)
i chose to shoot a ladder just for velocity. checking pressure as i go.
i will not list the loads as they are unique to this rifle and chamber.
the bbl is nitrite treated, hbn on bullets and bore.
berger 230 bullets and vvn570 powder in federal( yes federal) cases, fed 215 primers
i am trying to find a load around 2900 fps from a 9 twist bbl 27.125 long with a suppressor.
86-92 degrees 30% humidity
2828
2856
2867
2894
2898
2929
2940
2974
2986
NO pressure signs, easy bolt lift, no ejector marks
heat was present in the later shots, might be an issue in a 5 shot string.
its ok..i hit my mark (2900) in the middle if the test)

to continue..why do this ?
basically a new cartridge
the numbers are aprox 75 fps FASTER than predicted by software,
while having no indications of pressure issues, easy bolt lift, no ejector mark on the case head, primer still has a rounded edge.
i can now do some real load development, off a front rest, maybe with some distance 200/300 yards.
two things to note
1) THE BEGINING LOAD 2823 is super sonic past 2000 yards at my match elevation;
2) ignoring the first cold bore shot, sighters 2.3 and shot 1 of the string
had an average of 2822, and an sd of 1.5

( yes shot 1 is 2823..not 2828..typo)

did an actual 200 yard, 9 shot ladder with both velocity and location.
i'll post some data later, looking good for velocity goal.
here is the break down
all done at 200 yards
2821 to 2988
shots
234 had .47 vertical and 2886 ave velocity
345 had .48 vertical and 2911 ave velocity
567 had .2 vertical and 2942 ave velocity
i will probably shoot 3 shot groups of these 3 and see what happens
so far do good

You have what looks like 3 rifles on one post at Gunboards. Difficult to follow. But here they are. ^^^^^^

i shot the three loads mentioned above at 200 yards.
nothing interesting. the small group load 2 was over an inch at 200.
5000' and 75*.
scratching my head and thinking.

Maybe you should get some gold medal match. I used it to score a 697 28X's @ 300 last weekend. HAHAHAHAHA!

All kidding aside could it be the nitriding finish?

naw
it is used all over the place in the gun world.
slicker/harder/longer wearing
just means another trip to the range..oh darn!
( my savage 10 something in 308 win will do inside the 3" x ring at 600 with lapua 185's/n140)

Do you ever see Ben Steinholtz at Ben Avery?

mikeinco

not that i know of.
probably a dozen shooting disciplines on over 2000 acres.
i only shoot on the benchrest range, shared with a castbullet/22 group, the 1000 prone range, and the commercial 5-200 yard range( 67 shooting positions).

what does he do ?

F-Class.

mikeinco

i do not
i use their practice times to shoot OFF A BENCH at 600.
as long as i run pits they do not care about my bench.

F-Class.

so back to the range today
trying to fine tune the load
three 3 shot groups in small 0.2 grain steps
2 of the 3 were just a tad over 1 inch at 200 yards, third had a flyer.
so 1/2 moa, go do a seating depth test..but

here is the big issue
group one went 2" right of hold/center
group two goes 4" right of center
group three goes 8" right of center
all are water line/level
i have never seen a poi movement like this..never
solid mount. new scope( nf 12-42).
????????????????????????????

mikeinco

so after discussing with a few people
re-shoot with a different scope.
scope is changed out, new ammo in the same cases as before,
plus some sighters to dial it in with

mikeinco
08-01-2019, 01:56 PM
re-shot today..at 100 not 200
NO CREEPING TO THE RIGHT.
zero'd new scope at 40, then at 100,
shot three 3 shot groups just next to point of aim.
one is really small , 0.320"
so the offending object is either the NEW night force scope,
or the ivy 150 moa rings.
