I have a Savage 1899 in .30-30 cal that I cant seem to identify the exact model of. Serial is 1849xx that shows as a date of 1915 or 1916.

The rifle is in very good shape, but most blueing is worn.

The barrel length is 19.25". Fore grip is Schnabel. Unfortunately someone over the years drilled, tapped and slightly ground a flat spot to scope it.

Lever boss shows an H in a circle. If I remove the fore stock, I see an F stamped on the front right side of the receiver. Hard rubber butt plate. I dont believe its a take down model.

The front sight is a short pinned blade and the rear is adjustable for elevation on a sliding ramp and also adjustable for windage by knurled knobs. The rear is marked Savage Arms Oct 13, 1914. Maybe a Savage Model 15 Wind gauge ?

I have looked at a number of books I have but the barrel seems short. I don't think it has been cut as the front sight is intact.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Sounds like an 1899 Featherweight.. They have a 20" barrel, it's measured from the back of the breech, not the front of the receiver. The rear sight sounds like a sporting windage sight.

Pics would help!! :)

I found some more info online, written by MD . I think its either a F or an H. They sound pretty close. I tried my photo host (PB) but they cant seem to find my account now. I will post some pics when I find a new host. Thanks for your help guys.

Actually Big Al was wrong, I missed the part where you said it's not a take down.

If it doesn't have a take down function then it's a model 99H.
