Hi all anyone got any data like the coal on a 35 rem running hrdy 180 xtp and the 158xtp will be shooting out of a contender 12" hunter with built in comp. I know these projectiles are .357 and not .358 that a 35 is wanting to make up some varmit rds and paper punch.maybe deer load with the 180xtp..have h335,3031,varget powders that should be suitable.was curious on the oal and weather u need to seat in the crimp groove.the 180 has 2 but think the bottom 1 is more to lock the jacket together and was made for the 357 maximum...thanks all

69gen1,

First off, I am not an expert in this caliber but I saw you didn't get any help from anyone so I got out my Hornady manual and looked up the two bullets you want to use.

Unfortunately, I can't help with your question on seating to the crimp groove because I have never used either of these bullets.
If you start with loading at longer than the recommended seating depth and then work back to the canalure

The Hornady manual's O.A.L. recommendation for the 158 XTP # 35750 bullet is 2.235 and the manual lists the starting load for IMR3031 as 27.8 grains and the max load as 33.7 grains at 2000 fps velocity in a 20 inch barrel.

Recommended trim length is 1.910 with max trim length at 1.920.
QuickLOAD says that will only generate 1633 fps in a 12 inch barrel and that it will only generate 18,687 psi.
PMax is 39,885 psi for the 35 Remington.
QuickLOAD also shows a seating depth of 2.525 which would lower the pressure and velocity even more - to 1504 fps and 14582 psi.
That seems incredibly low.
QuickLOAD says it Pmax load is 47.5 with a seating depth of 2.525 and 42.8 at seating depth of 2.235.
That difference tells me you will need to be very careful with playing with seating depth with these bullets.

Neither of the other powders are listed.
My old Hornady manual (7th edition) doesn't list the 180 XTP.

I looked it up in QuickLOAD and found the 180 XTP #35771 with a O.A.L. default of 2.525 just like their default value for the 158 XTP.
Max loads from QuickLOAD is 44.3 grains for a seating depth of 2.525 with IMR 3031 at 2160 fps out of the 12 inch barrel. With a 2.235 seating depth, Pmax with IMR3031 becomes 39.3 grains.

I would get nervous playing with seating depth when 0.290 change in seating depth moves Pmax by 5 grains of powder.
I repeat,
you will need to be very careful with playing with seating depth with these bullets.

I would also play it very safe on any loads near Pmax and start at least 15% lower because the pressure changes so quickly. This caliber seems to be much more sensitive than any I normally load for.

Thank you cfjunkie that's a world of info...I. like to ask questions on rds I don't know much about .Seems hard to find on the web for the 35 in handgun or people willing to share
Basic data...its seems to be a common thing for some running the .357 in the 358 bore my old speer # 12 book list 2.20 oal with there bullit in rifle section for the 158 hp or flat in the .357 bullit but not handgun. (Might be same specs)thought maybe somebody might have
the hornady book With there specs on the 158 180 .I usely just use the 200gr core lokt factory for deer (it's a thumper) inside 100 for me.i know the xtp is designed for handguns in the 357 range but should be able to slow them down a little around the 1800 fps range because of the thin jackets.and make some great expanding rds.

Ignore the crimp groove. No need to crimp on a single-shot Contender. It will just shorten case life.

Go for the faster burning powders.

Should definitely get yourself a reloading manual. Read the first chapters. They have much more than load data inside.

http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol. Hodgdon has .35 Rem pistol loads at the link to the left.

I have 5 reloading books
and been reloading since 1990 for various rifle and pistol they just dont list the xtp bullit was wandering about the coal and yes I know I dont have to crimp for the contender as I dont crimp the 180 and 200 gr loads i use in it. the .357 pistol bullits are much shorter..I need to try and pick up the new hornady book for the newer style projectiles that's out because I like the hornady bullits in rifle and pistol ..thank you all for the help
