I just purchased a Hog Hunter in 308 and now looking for some glass for it. I think the maximum range would be 600 yards but as close as 50 yards. So a variable adjustment some where in the 1x to 8x range. Been looking at the Vortex, Primary Arms and Burris, but don't want to break the bank. Just looking for a solid scope, at a reasonable price that will hold up for years of use. Any suggestions

Any 1x scope will be heavier and more expensive. Maybe get a 2x7/8 or a 2.5x10. Natchez has a slew of refurb Nikon scopes for cheap right now.

3-9x40 are pretty cheap from most quality scope manufacturers. And would work fine from 50 to 600.

I just purchased 2 Vortex scopes, a PST Gen2 5x25x50 FFP for my .308, and a Crossfire 2 rimfire for my .22. I also have a Vortex Strike Fire 1x8 on my AR. I may replace them sometime down the road if something pops up I have to have because it is so wonderfully better, but I am very happy with these scopes and know that for the rest of the time I own them, I never have to pay to replace them, even if I drop them or run over them with the truck. Vortex lifetime no fault replacement guarantee.....

Athlon Argos BTR 6-24 50 or V ortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44, either will serve you well.

+1 on Athlon. They have some really great stuff and their prices are shockingly low.

Sightron's S-Tac line brings a lot to the table for a very reasonable price as well. In the power range you're looking at they have a 2-10x32 with a 30mm tube.

Can't make any suggestions in addition to the ones listed above.... But I can tell you which one NOT TO BUY.... Stay away from the Nikon FX1000 line.... They are complete junk.

I'm shocked to not see it posted already!
I bought the Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40, and it's a great scope! Great clarity, reasonable weight and length, and Leupold's guarantee - which is seldom needed!
Retails for @ $520, but I found mine at Impact guns online for under $300.

agree with obssd1958 on the vx-3i for hunting scope. I have my first Athlon Argos (http://www.argos.co.uk/) BTR 6-24 in the mail. You can get a great price on these from camera land in LI- call doug@516-217-1000. I am not associated with them in any way.

I got a Midas BTR 2.5-15 from there when it was $250 and it is a fantastic scope, great reticle and the turrets feel great. I have not done a lot of dialing, so I am not sure about the tracking yet.... but if it tracks as good as the Argos I have then it will be a winner.

I should have mentioned Leupold too and am surprised that no one has until now. The VX-3 is a good line. The VX Freedom appears to be good too at a lower tier than the VX-3. I have an Athlon Helos that's a nice looking scope but haven't used it on anything yet. Only thing I don't like about it (aside from being Chinese) is the adjustment range isn't very much.

Leupolds are GREAT scopes. Great customer service too. The last two scopes I bought were Vortex. Just wanted to try them. However, they may be as good as Leupold but I doubt that they will be better. I haven't used them enough to opine yet.
