I just bought two new Savage rifles on sale at Cabela's - a 12 FV .223 and a 12 FV 6.5mm Creedmoor.
They were delivered on the same day for store pickup.
The 12 FV .223 has a serial number starting with K993XXX
The 12 FV 6.5mm CM has a serial number starting with N160XXX

What happened to the L and M serial numbers in the series?
There is no way Savage manufactured 2 million rifles in such a short time.
From what I have noticed in the numbers across several years, their yearly production is about 400,000 units.

Does anyone know if they decided not to use the L & M prefixes for some reason?

The skipped the letter "I", because it looked too much like a number "1". They already used the "M" on the smokeless muzzle loaders, that are now out of production. I have no idea why they skipped the letter "L", perhaps they are saving it for something special.
