View Full Version : Savage 99: First Savage 99--Please help me understand what I have. I think circa 1945

I was told it was a 99R, but I don't think so. It has a Utica NY address. Serial number 445681. It has a schnabel forearm and gold inlayed "engraving" with a bear head on the sides. Chambered in 300 Savage. Pic in reply below.

your ser.# puts it in 1946-47 range. My guess is a EG

How common was the gold inlay immediately post war?

Couldn't do much better than that one for your first 99!! Very Nice!! Look's like an EG but know nothing about the engraving!!

Yeah, I just had a guy contact me out of the blue and asked if I'd be interested in buying any of his dad's guns who recently passed away. This is one of 11 that I bought. Spent way more money than I should have, but there was just too many cool items. That's what threw me for a loop though, because I don't know anything about Savages. And it looked like it was made yesterday not over 70 years ago. Too bad the recoil pad was put on.

It's a model 99 EG but thats not factory engraving. it was done aftermarket but a nice job none the less.
