I formed and mounted my cheek riser this morning. I borrowed a heat gun and so I was able to put pliability only where I wanted it. I made the 180 at the top and curved the sides a bit so it grips the stock.

I managed to put a flat spot in the riser where my face will land. If I said I did that on purpose, it would be an outright lie... but I think it'll work to my advantage.

Then came the point of no return: drilling the stock. I poked a couple of pilot holes and then got to work with the 1/4" (left side) and 3/8" (right side) bits. When I got some larger holes bored, I found a surprise: mini styrofoam peanuts. Thousands of them. Why in the world would Savage do that? The only reason I can think of is for sound deadening, maybe to make the stock sound solid. I've never removed the butt pad, but this makes me want to do it... over a garbage can.

Here's the riser mounted. The only thing left to do is glue the Velcro onto the right side of the riser. That's really only to help keep the stock pack in place. After that, and some adjusting, it'll be time to get to the range.

A couple of notes...

This is the first time I've done anything with Kydex aside from wear it, and I'm just impressed with how workable it is, and how it gives a clear visual indication when it's heated enough to be formed.
I don't think I'm going to need star washers or any sort of spacer between the Kydex and the stock. It grips well even with the fasteners finger-tight. I'll have to shoot it before I'll know.
Seriously... styrofoam peanuts. I don't get it.

Looks good. Are you going to paint it or keep it "natural"?

My plan is still to do the whole rifle in some sort of camo pattern using Aluma-Hyde.

Riser looks good.
When I do one I usually just heat the kydex up in a toaster oven on 350 and then bend it right over the stock and conform it straight onto the stock wearing a pair of work gloves. Never needed any star washers under it as it grips pretty well with no slippage. have you decided on what style knobs you're gonna use?
Use what you want as far as a finish but I've found no real appreciable difference between rustoleum camo paint topped with a dull lacquer clearcoat (Testors dullcoat model paint) and alumahyde when doing synthetic stocks except the price and the crazy $$$ hazmat shipping charge on alumahyde. Make sure that whatever product you choose that you prep and degrease very well. My preferred prep for paint is denatured alcohol as i know it leaves no residue.
Kydex is an amazing product to keep on a tinkers bench for sure.
Looks good, Keep up the good work.

I'm going to keep the socket caps. I don't think I'll be adjusting the riser often, and I'm going to be keeping the stock pack on... so I want them fairly flush.

I'm coming back to this rifle after letting it sit for awhile. I wasn't impressed with my sight-in session, but it was all my fault and not the rifle's. The scope slid slightly in the rings. Back to the drawing board.

Today--a few months later--I bedded the scope rail with JB Weld and installed the Lambeth bolt lift kit. The rail is curing and should be ready to install tomorrow. I'm hoping that Hurricane Dorian will not drop too much rain on us over Labor Day Weekend and that I can get out to the range to give it another try... after torquing the scope rings a bit more.

I had the same experience with styrofoam granules when I installed my cheek riser (Matthews Fabrication version). The only thing that makes sense is they use it to keep the fiberglass stock from sounding hollow(er), but someone here probably knows the real reason. Your build is looking good.

Coming back to this thread... Black Friday was kind to me. I ordered a MDT LSS-XL gen2 chassis in FDE, a rifle-length tube, a Magpul PRS gen3 in FDE, and an Ergo grip with palm shelf... also FDE. The grip is back ordered, though, so I ordered a cheapo DPMS grip to use in the meantime. I'll post photos when it's assembled.

OK, I installed everything today:

MDT LSS-XL gen 2 chassis
rifle-length receiver extension
Magpul PRS gen 3 stock
Ergo grip

The rifle gained 12.8 oz, all of which came from the heavy PRS stock. The chassis itself is at least 1 lb lighter than the Accustock. I'm really looking forward to the next range day.

I haven't been back here in a bit. I've gotten into 3D printing and wanted to add a spare round holder, but all of the ones I found either interfered with where my hand goes on the forend or the bipod. I designed this to mount above the bipod. I went through a couple of versions to get it right. Since taking these photos I've primed it and readied it for some Aluma-Hyde.

I also ordered a YHM Resonator K to quiet this rifle down a bit! I may be putting the Schuler Brake up for sale after that arrives.

I haven't updated this thread in awhile. During my last range session a few weeks ago, I found my scope moving due to recoil, again. When I got it home to clean it, I found that both rings had snapped off cleanly on one side:

I contacted Vortex and they told me that the Tactical rings are really just designed for red dots on rifles with lower recoil... although they say you can use them for a scope if you lap them (which I did). They helped me out with replacements and I picked up some 30mm Pro Series low rings. The low Pro Series rings (0.9") are 0.07" higher than the Tactical rings (0.83"); not a big deal. I got the rings in yesterday and remounted the scope. I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to zero it again.

I also took some Aluma-Hyde II in "Earth Brown" to my 3D-printed quiver and my bolt handle... because I could:

It's a decent match for the Magpul FDE and the MDT FDE.

I'm also awaiting a replacement muzzle device... more to come...

I've installed my Vortex Pro rings and my 3D-printed extra round holder. I haven't been to the range yet, but I'm guessing the holder is going to give out before the rings. I don't think even PETG plastic is up to the task of .308 recoil. Maybe if I print it thicker.

New member here and just enjoyed reading your thread. You do very good work. I am curios how the rifle shoots now ... good groups?

I shot it last week outside at some steel... but I've yet to put rounds on paper since reinstalling the scope. I'll try to post some targets!

Wow just saw the pic of those rings.
Just from looking one wouldn't think that a set of 6 screw rings billed by a major player in the firearms industry as part of a "tactical" lineup would be that prone to breakage.
Live and learn.
