thank you for allowing me in. i just got another savage 1899 rifle chambered in 250-3000, serial number is 2337xx made in 1920 i didnt realize it was a takedown until i removed forarm screw, my ither takedown has a slide to remove forarm, did they make some rifles this way?

It could be a solid frame that they used a take down barrel on.

Is the forearm marked with the serial number?

Either someone changed the forearm or it was made as a solid frame with a TD barrel. Probably wouldn't try to take it down until you find some answers.

the forarm is not marked with the serial number, the barrel unscrews easily and indexs properly, I have an 1899 takedown in 303 that also does not have a numbered forend, its a straight stock the 250 is a checkered pistol grip with the forend checkered also with a lyman #1 tang sight the 250 doesn have the metal piece on the forend like the 303. did savage record serial numbers as to what the gun was when it left the factory? thank you, I look forward to learning about these interesting rifles.

Forearm and the metal end should both have serial number

If there is a metal piece that is screwed/attached to the receiver end of the forearm, then that would make it a takedown. You might try removing this metal piece from the forearm then check the wood-facing side of it. My 99 takedown has the serial number and model letter stamped on it.

the 250 has no metal piece on forarm, and is attached to barell with a screw and fits properly, it looks like someone changed the lug under the barell to a screw type instead of the v latch type, as there is a punch mark on it, the butt plate and buttstock have the serial number on them but nothing on forarm

If you get it lettered the factory will tell you what model it was when it left the factory.

According to Royal's book, Savage didn't start stamping the serial numbers in the forearms until about 1923 and they dropped the "18" off the year in about 1920/21. Your serial number dates it to sometime in 1921. The 1899s did carry a screwed on forearm but the takedowns had a square bushing installed to assist in barrel removal.

Seriously, chuck that book right into your trash can right now. Every one of my rifles under that date are stamped on the forearm except for model 1895's which only had the butts and buttplates stamped.

Great, then my 99 is a one-off and worth thousands of dollars as it's original butt plate has the serial number stamped on the underside.
