Hey all, been a while since I posted here. That 284 case is calling my name again. :-\ I've long wanted a 6.5-284 in a long action for long-range but recently the 284 Win in a light weight short action also interests me.

1: Stagger or center feed?

2: WSM/RUM mag or standard diameter?

I seem to remember an early review of a WSM centerfeed rifle that fed the 284 case but it was a long time ago. I like the extra length that the WSM mag offers, if it works.

I'm sure that a standard (.473) centerfeed mags lips could be cut back a bit if the 284 case is too difficult to jamb into it.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure that the donor rifle is configured correctly.

Edit: Does Savage use RUM mags in the belted 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag rifles or do they have thier own magazine?

Well, since no one else has responded, I will state that I am running a .284 on a Savage long action centerfeed that used to be a 30-06.

It feeds fine no issues.

Bigfoot,

I have been looking at this cartridge for a bit also. I inquired here and was told that a standard bolt face(.473) will do the job. I'm looking at building a 284 win on my savage 10pc which is currently chambered in 308 win. Magazine will allow a coal of 3" and the only thing you need to do on the center feed is bend the mag lips back a little to allow the rebated rim to ride high enough for consistent bolt engagement.

Good luck!

I have no wisdom, knowledge or lies to share about this cartridge, but am also very interested. I would like to put together a good lightweight mountain rifle (22 inch barrel) that would have enough punch for elk. I was thinking something like a 140g Nosler partition in the 284 Win would have a little more punch than the Rem 7mm-08.

I had originally started looking at the 6.5/284 but the owner over at ER Shaw convinced me that the 140g is not a very good option in a SA for that chambering. Alas...

There is a very good article on the 6mmbr website that talks about a 284 win that a guy built on a short action. (gun of the week 95) His custom mag limited him to a 2.900" COAL and he was still able to get 2990fps with 162gr A maxs and RL-17. That was with a 25 inch barrel. With shorter 140's i would think you could still get over 3000fps depending on your magazines COAL limitations. I would think that you are correct about the 284 win having a little more puch, even when using a SA. The wider case will give you more powder capacity than the 7mm-08 with a similar COAL as a 7mm-08. Most data that I have seen shows a COAL of 2.800 for the 284 win so if you have room for a little longer COAL than that i would think you would be able to duplicate or exceed book velocities with the longer 160+ bullets.

I'm going to wait a bit to see how that Model 11 Lightweight Hunter looks. Makes sense to start with an already lightweight action. It'll be interesting to see where they trimmed 16 oz from. Bolt handle for sure.

Hello Guys,I have a 284 short action.I could not get it to feed reliably using the factory mag(308)
I used a wsm mag box and it was better but I did not trust it 100% Occasionaly all the rounds would pop out or jam in the mag and not feed any.I bought a center feed mag and follower from Fred,Welded some tabs on the mag so it resembled the factory mag. This made it a bit longer than the factory mag but the oal of the cartridge is over 2.9 easy.I had to modify the mag opening slightly with a file and a hacksaw blade for the mag slots Took about a half hour taking my time.It holds 3 rounds
with one in the chamber.it looks like it is supposed to be like that and it feeds flawlessly.I have not
used a chrono on any loads yet but max loads are not showing any pressure signs. good luck!

While on the .284 subject. Could someone offer up some info and experience about using the WSM magazine for the R 7m saum. Will the wsm mags function as is, or do they need some modification?

Standard cartridge center-feed mags. :)

Good information Squidman. Thanks.

My light-weight rifle idea is the 284 necked to .277, a S/A 270 Winchester. Pac-Nor chambers it. 6.8 bullets and bulky powder for low recoil blacktail hunting and 270 bullets for bigger critters. The 284 case is a touch long but the mags allowing a 2.9" OAL solves that.
