1/7 or 1/8 twist in 26in .223

I have finally decided to rebarrel my axis to a 223 from a 243 that will be finished at 26in. I am having trouble figuring out what twist I am wanting to use. This rifle will do most of its work in the 100 to 800yd range. I will be shooting heavys when shooting over 300yds I was thinking the 90-77gr weight class. Normaly at this point I would say go with a 1/7, but I have stock piled a bunch if other bullets in the 55gr to 62gr weight probably around 1k rounds. I will be using the lighter stuff for the 100-300yd work. I will probably be shooting 100-300 about 65% of the time. The question is will the 1/7 be to fast and over stabilize? Or am I just over thinking it.

1.7 is required for 90's.

They say the freebore for 90's (ISSF reamer has .169) kinda wrecks it for lighter weight bullets. My 7 twist does alright with Frontier 55grn hp factory rounds. Being a cheap SOB, I planned on never buying 90s, which means 8 twist. Then the 88's came out, I ordered a 7, HA HA. I would go 8 unless you want to shoot mainly 90's

To be honest I don't think I'll ever get up in the sierra 90s and 95s to the cost vs performance in 223. I could see myself trying the 88gr eld, when doing the stability calculation they are only marginally stable in a 1:8. A bullet that I do plan to shoot as I have had great luck with the brand is the barnes match burners and they come in a 85gr bullet. The barnes are a bit shorter and will be fully stable in a 1:8.

I had a 7 twist, 5R, .223 Wylde built thinking I would try the really heavy bullets. That has not panned out, but it shoots 53 Vmax, and 69/77 TMKs equally good so far. I would not be necessairly afraid of the 7 and it gives you the latitude to go bigger. One thing about trying to shoot both really long/heavy and short/light rounds is the OAL. You will want the longer throat for the 80s, but it will make your 55's jump a river.

I'm leaning towards a 1:7 at this point I think, just because I already have a 1:10 that I'm giving to my wife as her first training rifle and if my new barrel wont shoot the 55s then I already have a sub moa group with that rifle that she can use. I would rather have to fast of a twist at this point than be limited by the 1:8 like I am at with the 1:10 twist.

1-7" is the only option with a .223 if you want to shoot the heavy pills.
