Looking to buy a savage precision rifle. will be target shooting at 50 to 300 yds possible more once in a while but not often. Would a 223 cover it ? which rifle do you guys recommend ?

223 would be fine, cheap to shoot also.

Yep, my .223 is excellent at 300yd. Will even go further with the right ammo. I can shoot at 600 if I can dope the wind right. And that's with an Axis HB. I zeroed mine at 200yd.

My rifle loves 69gn SMK's and Norma Match bullets. Shot less than an inch at 200yd this morning. It also shoots 77gn SMK's well. They are good at the distances beyond 300yd and they do handle wind better.

you bet, i have an older 12bvss 223 9 twist, my longest kill calculated with software was at 711yds with the 75Amax, varget powder, i just picked up a new model 12 LRPV 223 7 twist, currently shooting the Berger 80.5gr shoots great

Definitely go with the 223 Rem and 69 or 75 grain bullets. Get a barrel with at least a 1 in 9" twist. I built my son a 223 years ago using a factory Savage 26" Varmint weight barrel with a 9" twist, his rifle loves the Hornady 75 grain A-Max.

223 is nice, and mine loves 52 grain Bergers.

If your planning on shooting further than 300 yards, but less than 600, I would suggest a 6br F/Class rifle.

I have a 12FLV in 223. I have shot 53-69 grain to 600 yards. It is not a picky gun with a wide variety of ammo both off the shelf and hand loads... makes load development difficult! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
