Is there anyway to know by caliber and/or serial number if I have a small or large shank?

Not always, I have a 7mm wsm built on a factory small shank barrel. Not sure how many years they built wsm on small shank though before they decided to beef it up.

Easiest way to tell is the nut on the Large Shank is shorter vs. the Small Shank.
I can look at the nut and tell you what Shank you have, fell free to post a picture of it.

You can also measure the barrel with calipers at the barrel nut. If it's over 1.055 its a large shank, or measure the barrel nut length itself. 5/8 inch is a large shank. 7/8 is small.
