Max Cartridge OAL for SA SF Magazine

Curious question. What is the max cartridge OAL for a short action, stagger feed magazine and still feed reliably? Have a 7-08 and wondering how bad powder compression will be with 162 a-max's. Also if a straight .284 might be a possibility with this action. I know a LA is preferred but this is what I have available.

I have a savage 10pc in 308 win. and have been pondering this same question(about the 284 win).

Measured the internal length of mag (center feed) and came up with 3.050" which should allow for a cartridge OAL of 3.000" Read about a guy on 6mmbr website with a 284 win in short action and his max cartridge OAL was 2.900" cause of his custom built bottom metal and mag. He could still get 2990 fps with 162 amax and RL-17 in a 25" tube. Not sure how much a guy gains in powder capacity with .100" less bullet in your case, but would imagine that in a SA 284win with a COAL of 3.000" you should be able to get a little over 3000fps with a 25" barrel with 162's.

Not too familiar with the 7mm-08.

would post the link to the article if i knew how :-\ go to 6mmbr website and look at the guns of the week page. there are a couple of 284s on there and i'm certain that this one was a SA. Think it may have been like week 93 or close to that.
