View Full Version : Savage 24: Savage 24S-E trigger doesn’t return forward after firing

Just bought a 24S-E where after I fire it I have to manually push the trigger forward because otherwise the barrel(s) will not close after “broken” open nor will the hammer lock to the rear. Almost seems like a spring is missing or broken.

Otherwise the gun functions normally. Any ideas?

I thank you for any input.

Since it's firing I would take that to indicate the main spring is good. The trigger not returning forward would likely be the trigger spring.

Thank you Mr Baker! It looks like all I have to do is to the stock off to have a look at the mechanism. It should be easy enough to see what’s missing/wrong. A cursory web search shows that parts shouldn’t be too difficult to get.

Thanks again, BJ

Just be forewarned that the main spring in these guns is HEAVY. It's been a few years since I've owned one, but if memory serves me right there was a YouTube video that showed a makeshift tool to help compress the main spring for disassembly.

OK, we’ll proceed with caution.

Upon closer inspection, nothing was wrong. Somebody got carried away with spray can blueing and gunked up the trigger mechanism. I cleaned things up and the gun operates like it should. Question regarding the firing pin screws (#29 & 30 above): both are present and threaded in the receiver so they don’t protrude. They are not tightened however and I wonder how they are supposed to be installed properly? My model is a 24S-E which is different but I assume these screws have the same function on mine?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

The screws going into the side of the reciever? I would imagine those should be snug, but don't go all Magilla gorilla on them.

One of the screws snugs up, the other one doesn’t, seems I could tighten it until it disappears in the receiver. I’ll leave well enough alone since the gun works fine.

Thanks again!

Screws should be slightly loose to allow firing pins to move. You can take them out and clean firing pin holes. Firing pin for the rifle has a spring on it , the shotgun doesn't
