light firung pin strikes

friend purchased a used Savage 6br LRPV, shot it first time today and he said he got for misfires out of 20 shots, i took the bolt apart and cleaned it up, checked firing pin protrusion it is right at .050 and set the spring length at 1.900 and that gave me just about perfect clearance for the cocking pc in the fired position, will try it again tomorrow, if problem still exist, what should i be looking at, i am thinking it needs a new spring, gun has approx 2900 rounds thru it, barrel was set back and shoots excellent.

Brass may have shoulder pushed back to far.

Re-set the protrusion to .030-.035", then compress the spring to as short as you can get without bottoming out on the cocking ramp bottom. 1.900" is a ball park figure, and typically you can go another .025" or so. I've never seen any springs go bad or take a set, it's usually a a lack of travel that results in a loss of momentum.

Just curious how much kinetic energy we’re leaving on the table with a 0.020 to 0.015” difference in travel? I’m not sure what the tolerances/spring characteristics are in the savage spring and the mass of the firing pin assembly. This would also change the lock time no?

thats exactly what i did, plus when i took the bolt apart, previous was a believer in lots of grease, so cleaned it up got real close to the bottpm of the ramp maybe around 1.880 and all is well
