I am getting more interested int this round as I try to decide between a std 22-250 and 22-250 AI. It sounds like like a nice round but the price of the brass has me concerned. Anybody shot one?

The round has some impressive numbers, and feeds through a magazine. It uses excellent brass, you got to pay for the good stuff. The round was developed before Lapua offered 22/250 brass. Yes there is a big difference in price between Lapua 22/250 brass and the 6.5x47 brass. You could also make the 224 off of cheaper 6xc brass, but you would have a large primer. David Tubbs sells the Norma brass for $66 a 100. That route is cheaper than 22/250 lapua brass.

Brass is made from 6.5x47 Lapua. It is essentially a 22-250 Ackley, .050" short.
The chamber is reamed short to match the length of the brass, and the dies are shortened accordingly.

You can do the samething for a 25 caliber wildcat......hold a 250 Savage AI reamer short. ;)

I am thinking of doing the same thing with a 6-250AI reamer.

Fred, what is the process of forming the brass? Also, can you use the 22-250 Lapua brass?

First step is size in 6x47 Lapua die and then the shortened 22-250 AI die, then fireform.
If 22-250 Lapua brass were available at the time, I would not have shortened it. I liked the idea of the 22 x47 Lapua, but no body made GOOD dies yet, and I was not going to spend a fortune on them. By making it an improved, the dilemma of dies and reamer costs were diminished. It is a more efficient case than the 22-250 AI, using less powder to gain the same velocities.

There is the 25 Deerhunter, basically a 250 Improved .100" short.
