Can I swap out DBM's?

I have a doner action, 300 Win Mag, which is a long action. Can I remove the DBM and insert one of a .308, or something to hold a 6.5x284? I don't know if what I'm saying even makes sense, but I would want to change out the DBM for a different type (more narrow) cartridge. Is it do-able or do I need to start bending mag lips?

.308 is short action so it won't fit. But 30-06 should fit and work fine.
