Does anyone make an aftermarket bolt head for the new 224 Valkyrie? Kicking around the idea of building a bolt gun with a 12FV donor action...

Ptg should be able to get one for you

I glanced at PTG but didn't see the right size. Has anyone used a PPC sized bolt face(.440")?

If you are planning to reload for 224 Valkyrie, be sure you get the correct shell holder, as the shell holder for the 6.8 SPC does not work, as I was originally advised.

RCBS #19 seems to work properly.

.223 bolt head opened up "a little", works like a charm for the 6.8 and takes all of 5 minutes.

That is the route I decided to take given the price of a 6.8 PTG versus the $20 Savage bolt head.

After a small break in building, the project is moving forward again. I got the barrel finished up and installed. I went with a 24" 1/7 twist stainless. My stock should be done next week. I'll need to order some dies. I have a decent supply of once fired Hornady brass and 88gr ELD-Ms. I may order some Starline brass to experiment with also. I'll post some pics when the stock is done.

Those 88gr ELD's have proven to be a very difficult bullet to get to shoot in my gun. I haven't heard much about them- maybe everyone else is seeing the opposite. My barrel is also a 24" 1 in 7 twist- but it's a 22-250. I can't get them to shoot under a inch at 100 yards even though the gun shoots very well with other bullets. They do get better as distance increases (not that the groups get smaller but they go from being a little over 1moa at 100 to about a 5 inch group at 800. Hopefully they work better for you- that's the best deal in a heavy .224 bullet I can find.

That's very common with VLD bullets, they are not made for close range.

The first Valkyrie I built in our shop was a 26", 1/7 twist. It shot the factory loaded 88s extremely well. The final 10 rounds of barrel break-in went into 0.34" at 100 yards. I'm hoping my 24" 1/7 will do nearly as well.

Can you explain on how to open the bolt head up and what you used to do that?

A small lathe(small chuck or collet) with the back of the lugs and the counter bore indicated in. I would also be interested in all of the diameters running the same.

Was hoping it could be done with a dremel!
