I have a Model 12 Benchrest rifle (3-screws) in .308 Win. and I’m going to bed the action. There seems to be some confusion as to whether to bed the tang area or not. I’m reading both technic’s on this forum.
So what are the “REASONS” for bedding or not bedding the tang area ? As the stock came from the factory; the tang touches the wood at one place and not at others so that is of no help in answering the question. I’d like to hear the “REASON” for bedding or not bedding the tang area of this particular action.

Generally speaking, there's no reason to bed the tang on a Savage because it's not a bearing point on the action like it is say - a Remington 700. Rem 700's have the rear action screw in the tang, thus you bed the tang on them. Since the rear action screw is forward of the trigger on a Savage - well ahead of the tang - the tang doesn't have to be bedded. I know Fred @ SSS free-floats the tang by wrapping it with a few layers of electrical tape.
