improving the 338 RUM with handloads

First of all first post here, from AK so I figure I should build a 338 for moose/bear etc. and ran across this while doing some research.

Just got this from Wiki talking about a 338 RUM

"Because this cartridge already operates at very high pressures (65,000 PSI), Handloaders cannot give significant improvements over factory ammunition as many handloaders have done over the years with more conventional, lower pressure rounds"

is this correct?

Researching my first build I know I want to go 338 it's just what one now.

Norma, Edge, or just plain RUM or maybe even just buy a 116 in 338 win mag and call it a day.

338 Norma is good, Rum is faster and the Edge is faster yet. It just depends on how much power you want. I have a good number of 338's and for me personally I am comfortable here in bear country with any of them. The Edge is my cartridge of choice and the one I always pick up when it is time to bear hunt.

A new 338 wildcat that is also worth looking at is the 338 X 375 Ruger. Not much different ballistically than the 340 Weatherby though.

No actual 338 rum experience.

Alliant has a new group of powders called power pro and you can get another 100-150 fps out of those
in general but they are new so not a lot of data.

Think I would want a different cartridge in AK depending on how you hunt.
338 rum wants a long barrel and I want a short barrel for a hunting rifle.

For me I would prefer a 375 ruger with a 22" barrel.
Witht he right bullet the 375 ruger has decent trajectory.

If you are going to stick with 338 caliber, RL17 should be a good one in the 338 winmag,
338-06 etc.

Thanks for the info. I have been eying the Edge the only drawback I can see about building one is the need to stretch the mag box to get a repeater I really don't want a single feeder and I definitely don't want to have to remove the bolt to eject a non spent round. Any Idea how much this would cost at a gunsmith in the AK area if able?

John Wills near Rabbit creek (Anchorage) would be the person to ask that question to. Every shop with the exception of his and one other have a lot of gold flecks apparently attached to their price tags.

There is currently a very nicely price Edge in the want adds here for $1200. ready to go!

I would ship outside personally.
