Anyone shooting one? When my current 243 barrel goes, I am seriously considering the 6mm SLR for the better barrel life and minimal case prep. I am a hunter so maintaining 243 ballistics is a priority. A 1-9 twist 26 inch barrel will be peachy. If I can get 2000-2500 rounds out of the SLR I would be very happy. If I could get that out of the 243 I would be happier! Thanks for the help

What does the 6 slr have over the 6 creedmoor? Supposedly the 6br Ackley Improved will run 2900 with 105GR bullets, how close is that to what you need?

I agree with Evl. But there are some guys on Accurate Shooter(6BR) that will give you all the help and information you want.

Sorry but I really don't see much of an improvement over the standard 243. I'd go the AI route.

a 6mm running over 40grs of powder will have a hard time being a 2000 round barrel depending on your accuracy requirements. Mine are high, Once a barrel won't hold 1/2 MOA consistently it's retired to a practice barrel or permanently retired period. There are reports of guys running H1000 and not seeing the dramatic velocity fall off in variants like the 6 Competition match and some in the SLR, but you have to have the case capacity to run enough H1000 to get the velocity that makes it worth shooting a 6mm.

Now the 6 Dasher formed off the BR case is capable of obtaining 2950-3025fps with 105's (Barrel length and how hot you're willing to run it come into play) But running it around 2970 I know a lot of guys seeing 3krds on it. When I started doing all the math for my needs personally I just didn't see gaining a few tenths in a drop and 1 or 2 tenths in certain wind conditions was worth it at the cost of consistency and barrel life. You can shoot a 6.5x47 or 6.5 Creed with 130's and get very similar results and much longer barrel life than the 6. Plus the 130's hit quite a bit harder than 105's.

If determined to shoot a 6mm I would looks at the 6 Creed and run Alpha or Lapua brass or the 6XC. The SLR will not get you the performance gain you're looking for with all the work you will put into setting up brass etc. That's my take on it after loads of research and testing the waters and running the numbers on the majority of these cartridge offerings.

I liken the idea of the SLR because it will feed reliably in my 1985 production 110E, I can use any leftover 243 cases etc, using 243 load data and it just seems very practical.
3000 fps with a 100 grained is fine for a hunter and while 1/2 inch groups are very nice indeed, its not necessary for a deer rifle. Plus, it's different.

That's it. It is your rifle and it does not have to meet any requirements except yours. Why climb a 29,000 foot mountain?

I wanted a 6.5 slr years ago, cool design. Not many reamers out there and expensive dies slowed me down. Then I put money on an Ackley with the same problems....

Thinking about all of these cartridges that we have today, it is too bad that all of the 308 based cartridges where not 30* shoulders with about a 16th more neck.

It would have made life so much simpler.

The 6 Competition Match (improved 243) has been developed over the past 10 years by a handful of long range competition shooters. The case has enough extra capacity to allow H1000 powder (49 gr) to easily produce 3150fps with 105's. The cool, slow burning H1000 makes for long barrel life...3000 rounds typical with some shooters reporting up to 4000 accurate rounds. No other 6mm option compares in velocity vs. barrel life.

But of course there is no free lunch. You either need to buy a reamer or use only those gunsmiths that have a reamer. You must fireform and buy a Redding Egolf or LRI die.

That is ok. I agree that the SLR was what the 243 should be been. Its making a good thing better. Any improvement in bore life is appreciated.
