Hey,

I just bought a rifle from a friend of mine... Winchester 70 in 300win mag. He has Leupold standard (STD) bases with the rear adjustable ring. He hasn't shot it since the mid 80's, and I was wanting to see what your thoughts were are the strength of the base/mount situation. The rifle has a Leupold Vari-xII 4-12 on it, but I am concerned the recoil will be too much for the rear ring. He bought it and built it for a elk hunt, but never fired it aside from sighting it in, and now it has a new home with me. Should I look for a stronger option?

If your talking about the base with the windage adjustment on each side of the rear portion, don't be worried about it.
Ive had one on a 7x300 Weatherby for at least 30 years supporting a VX3 3.5x10, and it's held up well to lots of rounds.
I wouldn't change anything, just shoot and enjoy the gun.
It's the same base as the old Redfield JR base which was also very popular.
