I get mine from ar15.com in the EE section. You could buy surplus ammo that uses that brass too. That’s how I got my 1st 1000 pieces of brass.

Unless you enjoy dealing with crimped primer pockets, pulling press handles, and buying additional small base dies to correct the once fired issues, the better value is in the 250 count bags of Federal American Eagle '5.56x45 NATO' (NOT the '223 Rem', those are FC headstamp) at 40-45 bucks. New, unprimed.

Lake City brass is harder and has a thicker flash hole web that greatly strengthens the base of the case and its primer pocket. And Federal cases are noted for soft brass and primer pockets that stretch out far too early. And as you can see below Lake City brass is harder and stronger than Lapua.

Bottom line, cheap bastards like me prefer buying once fired Lake City brass. Because my scrap brass bucket is full of Federal cases with over sized primer pockets.

For a bolt rifle, Hornady brass does just fine. I use LC brass for my AR.

No, what I specified is NEW 16/17 NATO headstamp LC, NOT Federal. Federal American Eagle branded but LC brass.

And the newer Federal 223 ain't bad at all, very little difference between it and LC except they are trimmed rather short. This is the newer stuff, 4 dots and 'Fed 223' headstamp. Same weight as LC. I was skeptical because Fed did have crappy commercial 223 brass like 8-10 years ago but currently the 250 ct FAE labeled '223 Rem' is decent. The FAE 250ct bags labeled '5.56x45 NATO' is LC brass.

Federal is associated with the Lake City Army Ammo plant, ATK/Vista is the contractor and Federal is involved.
