I just got a Savage 99 in 300 savage caliber. Per the serial number look up, it was made in 1937. It has a 22" barrel, ramped and dovetailed front sight, safety on lever and a checkered pistol grip stock. The round counter has an oval window. The lever boss is a "Z" not in a circle. There is a "7" stamped on the bottom of the barrel under the fore end and "SP" in a circle stamped on the left side of barrel by receiver.

I think it is a 99G but not sure. What does the Z, the 7 and the SP indicate? Thanks in advance.

Take down or solid frame?

Solid frame with standard checkered fore end (no fancy tip) and checkered pistol grip style stock.

It's not a G then, I'm thinking you've got a pre-war R.

Does it have sling studs on it with flat bottoms?

Does it look like the one furthest on the left?

I think you got 99-H carbine.

Judging from what I have read and the fore end checkering pattern (with ither things) plus other groups ideas, I think it is a model 99t. I cant find a reference to any other checkering pattern that covers thw fore end and goes around the bottom of it. Any other ideas?

There is a T and a pre-war R in the pic I posted, isn't it one of them?
