Savage 99 Muskets MONTREAL HOME GUARD .303sav.

Anyone have info. on EXACTLY how many MHG. muskets were actually shipped to montreal (Quebec Canada).

I have read that 2500 were ordered and shipped. other literature says approx. 1000 were sold. still,a ''dealer'' in Canada has ''one of only 827 '' muskets purchased by the MHG.
As a side note, MHG were well to do English business men that actually paid for the muskets out of their own pockets....factory would have their names ''Engraved'' on stock and or receiver.....

Its been said that the WELL TO DO did not want to ''go over seas'' but wanted to appear that they were ''doing their part''. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

827 is what is listed in the Savage records. The order was for 500 with an option of buying 2000 more. I've got copies of the factory ledger with most of them shipped in mid December with a small batch later on.

Not all the rifles were engraved in fact I think I've only seen 5 or 6 that actually were.
