Any tips for removing or installing the butt plate on an axis without breaking the locking tab on top? Savage has sent me two of these. I broke one removing and one installing.

I have found that if you are very, very, VERY careful -- you will break 3 out of 4.

I wonder if filing down the tab a little would help?

Pisgah really said it best. I've not had any problems with installing them, but I've broken a few when taking the butt pad out. It probabaly wasn't meant to be taken apart, so disassembly is more of a bug than a feature.
I expect you might be able to more reliably remove the thing with a machine screw of the appropriate diameter to depress the tab. Thread a nut onto the screw to limit its travel and slowly back it off until the tab slides clear.

Anyone tried hot water to soften the tab before trying to depress it?

Funny you say that. I was walking around my shop trying to think of something to help make installation easier and I seen my heat gun laying there. Wala!

It worked??? I only wrecked 1 out of 3. By the time I thought of heat I had Boyds so never tried it.

Sure did. I would assume that filing a 1/16th or so off the tab would work too.
