Could this action be converted to a 6.5 creedmore or similar short action cartridge.
Are the bolt heads the same size ie short action bolt heads compared to wsm bolt heads and the barrel shank size.

Thanks

Short answer: yes.
The short action bolt heads are interchangeable. The WSM has longer bolt lugs, and therefore, a longer firing pin. You may or may not be able to adjust the firing pin length depending on the date of manufacture and the parts available at that time. The rifle most likely is a large shank action, requiring a large shank barrel. Easily swapped, but not without a few hitches.
Review the Savage FAQ’s for information on how to tell the difference between large and small shank actions, and the difference between WSM and standard bolt heads.

Thanks, It is a Large shank barrel.
So I take it that a short lug is required, is the firing pin adjustable or can a shorter one be purchased.
With regards to fitting a new barrel, the gunsmith would just have a longer threaded tang to accommodate the short lug?
Does the larger shank barrel fit into a normal stock, was probably going to fit into a MDT savage short action chassis.
Thanks

It’s not that a short lug is required, more like that’s what you’ll get with a standard bolt head. Until recently, firing pins were somewhat adjustable. Savage switched to a one-piece firing pin a couple of years ago. You’ll have to take the bolt apart to figure out which one you have. If it’s not adjustable, you’ll have to order the shorter one. There is no difference in chambering depth or thread length between the WSM’s and others. The stock should accommodate either, the outer diameter of the barrel nut is the same or we’d need two different wrenches.
