Savage Model 1899 in 22High-Power

Doing some research on a Model 1899 in 22High-Power (5.6x52mmR) that has been handed down through the family. Currently have some reloading dies and general data but if anyone here has some inside tips they would be greatly appreciated. Not a real lot out there that I have found on this particular chambering on this model. Serial number indicates that it was produced in 1915 which would be accurate to the family story that goes along with it.

If you're looking for load data, Pet Loads by Ken Waters has some pretty extensive info. What I remember reading is that's it's probably the most difficult round to reload for, think it has to do with odd size bullets!!?? If you like I could copy the pages and PM them to you. Glad you got to keep such a treasured piece of family history!!

After a little more research, the .22 HP is based on the .25-35 necked down, so you could make cases if you have to. Graf & sons has brass but finding a .227/228 bullet my be fun.

Sellier & Bellot sells it as a 5.6X52mmR

According to Ammoseek it is available from various sources. That will at least get you shooting & some brass.

When I get home I'll check my 1970's era Lyman manual - it has many such "oldies" with load data.

IMR3031 start 24.0 gr 2433 fps & Max 27.0 gr 2777 fps
IMR4895 start 25.0 gr 2400 fps & Max 28.0 gr 2754 fps
IMR4320 start 27.0 gr 2652 fps & Max 30.0 gr 2840 fps

Accuracy

IMR 3031 25.3 gr for 2604 fps

Factory Duplication

IMR3031 25.5 gr for 2624 fps

Also loads for 60 gr cast (w/gas check) and 8 gr cast if you are interested.

I have a bit of experience with this cartridge. You can find brass pretty easy, norma is available from a few sources.
You can use 25-35 cases and run them through a FL sizing die. Bullets are the issue. I use custom made 70 gr .228 semi spitzer.
Hornady made some .227 spitzer bullets a while ago but they seem to be designed more for the European rifles 5.6x52R than your slow twist 22 high power.


Headspace is a problem with this rifle/cartridge and the cases stretch a lot, this will lead to case head separation. You need to check the case shoulder with a headspace comparatorand set up your reloading die to not bump the shoulder back to much. I bump it .002.


I load 25.0 Grains of IMR 3031 and 70gr bullets, shoots excellent, fun toy to shoot.
