Rebarreling a Model 116 .270

I have a Model 116 in a .270 and I just inherited a .270 from my grandfather. I don't know much about the subject, so I was wondering what i could rebarrel my old .270 into?

To put it simple, just about anything. What do you want to use the gun for and what do you like?

It would be used for deer hunting. I've been thinking about a .257 Roberts or .250 Savage. Either of those work?

Yes, both would work fine, you could go with the improved versions also, along with many others too

Like I said, I know nothing about this stuff. Do I just need to get a new barrel or would I have to replace the action as well? Thanks again for you time and input.

Both would work great (as would a 25-06). You just need a new barrel, the tools to remove/install barrels (nut wrench and vise or action wrench and nut wrench) and a "go" headspace gauge (some will tell you you don't need the gauge but if you are new to this, I would rent/borrow/buy one).

What would be the differences in a .257 Roberts and a 25-06? They shoot about the same size cartridge.

The 25-06 has an edge on capacity and pressure specs so it has an edge in velocity (also recoils more, makes more noise and eats barrels faster).

I like the smaller cartridges in 257 (250 Savage AI is my favorite) but some folks like the additional velocity the bigger ones bring to the table.

Why not stick with the .270? You can find someone who has pulled a brand new Savage barrel off of a rifle and pick it up for way less than an afrermarket would cost and it will be more than accurate enough for deer hunting. Also the .270 is one of the best hunting rounds available.

If you read the original post you'll see he has a 270 and has inherited another 270 from his grandfather. For my money I went with both a 250 Savage and the 257 Roberts. Both are fine old cartridges that were cutting edge in there time. Still viable cartridges today in this era of magnumitis. I look forward too this falls deer season trying out these old veterans.

Since it is a long action I would think .257 or .25-06 rather than .250.

I have a 270 and love it! Dime groups at 100 using 140gr factory Hornady BTSP.

If a 260 barrel will work, that would be my second choice!

What's wrong with the original barrel? Is it shot out? You're going to spend a lot of time and money to get anything any better than a .270 Win with 130grn bullet.

I'd just rather not have two .270s. I love the .270 as well, just wanted another caliber to play with.
