Model 340

Can anyone on here tell me about a Savage Model 340. in .225 cal. Never heard of .225??

Rarest of the 340 series - 225 Winchester is a good round but you won't find much (any?) factory ammo for it. Kind of like a shortened 220 Swift (semi-rimmed case etc.).

I would think it was a little hot for the 340 (maybe why there aren't that many of them?).

If it is in good shape it should have a little more collector value than 340's in 30-30 or 222 do.

If it's in 85% or better, I'd really look hard at that. Seems like a decent buy considering what people want on gunbroker and other online sites. A friend of mine has a 340 (may be a 342 but definitely in that series) in .222 that is a sweet little rifle. It came with an old weaver 6x and shoots great. I have casually been trying to find one in .225 for a decent price, but they seem to fetch a good couple bucks. From what I understand the .225 is about the equivalent of a .22-250, maybe a tad slower, but close, and a semi-rimmed cartridge like was mentioned before. My local Scheel's store (all around sporting goods store, like academy) stocks factory winchester .225 so there is still ammo for them. Does anyone out there have any first hand experience??

Had a 340V that I bought new in the mid-80's (disremember exactly when, but it must have been near the end of the 340's production).
Shot quite well carrying a Simmons 10 power scope that I had picked up at the first SHOT Show back in 1979. Killed a fair number of woodchucks with it, with hits at 200 to 250 yards easy to do. Lived in Massachusetts at the time and a 250 yard shot was a LOONNGG
one there. I was never quite comfortable shooting factory ammunition in that rifle as I thought the .225 was pushing that single-lug design
a bit. Never had ANY problems with it, however. I did hand load for it, but the data has long since disappeared. As a point of interest, the rim diameter of the .225 is the same as the '06 family. An '06 shell holder will do nicely with the .225.

I think the 340's are nifty rifles. I had a Stevens Model 325 in .30-30 that I never got around to shooting. Now have a 90% 340B in .222 Remington that was made in 1953. Mirror bore, shoots five-shot one-inch (or less) groups all day long. Bought it - wearing a cheap Tasco 3X9 scope -earlier this year for 212 bucks out the door. It now has a Weaver K10 that I got at the July show in Richmond for $40.00!

Frankly, though, I'd be hard put to spend more than $275.00 on any 340, unless it was really, really nice, or had some high quality scope...
