Just be aware that full metal jacket ammo can ricochet in a big way. A bad thing when shooting across bean fields at running coyotes. Here in Illinois you can't hunt anything with fmj ammo. So you don't want any in your car when out hunting.

7.62 NATO is loaded to a lower pressure than 308 commercial. Just the opposite of 223 and 5.56mm NATO. So you don't have to worry about extra wear with 7.72 NATO.

If all your going to do is hunt with that rifle, Good factory loaded ammo should be good enough. Try different brands to see what shoots best. I would recommend 168 gr. bullets as they seem to be more accurate in savage .30 cal barrels. They are in my .308.

Yes I'm sure about that and for sure don't care what some guys brother in Canada told him.

5.56mm NATO is loaded hotter than SAMI spec 223 Rem. Way I read the OP's question was he was wondering if 7.62 NATO was hotter than SAMI standard 308 Win. It's not and most 308 Win isn't loaded to SAMI max pressure.

168gr or 175gr A-Max factory ammo works great in all of my Savages with a 10 twist barrel

168gr or 175gr SMK rounds are king in our rifles. Either takes 39gr of IMR 3031 and you're set. I get excellent accuracy with either. 168 for under 300 and 175 for over. Just upgrade your stock and get some good glass and you're set.

Good luck,

You need to be more creative when you chose your next handle . You have used to many of the same letters in your new name. Poke pow whatever. Yo stupid ignorant ass hole. I called you out the first time and now you're back with another name. So far I've wasted ten minutes of my life on you that I'll never get back. Say good bye.

so basicly i can use standard .308 rounds as well as 7.62x51 nato rounds they will both get the job done i just want to try the nato round vs the .308 round?

Yes, either is fine. Sometimes with older military rifles that were designed to shoot 7.62x51 NATO, it is recommended not to shoot commercial 308 Win because it operates at higher pressure. Your Savage is made for the pressures of 308 Win so it will be fine with either. Get a good soft point for hunting. Something in the 150-175 gr. range for deer. Remington Core-Lokt would be my first choice. I've never had them fail on deer/pig sized game, though I have not used them in 308, only 270.

There is less than 2,000 PSI pressure difference between the .308 and the 7.62, also the European CIP rates them both as the same cartridge. With the advent of the new 7.62mm, NATO, Ball, Special, M118LR the rated chamber pressures are the same.

The confusion over the .308 and 7.62 started when the change over from CUP to PSI happened and the written pressures changed from 50,000 cup to 60,000 psi, BUT both pressures are the same just as 60 mph is the same as 100 kph.

As you can see below it is perfectly safe to put 32 psi in your tires in the photo below BUT if you put 220 kPa in your tires they will blow up and kill everyone in a 300 yard radius.

Below is my Indian made Enfield 2A1 in 7.62 NATO, the very first ammunition I fired in this milsurp was Winchester .308 ammunition because I knew the actual chamber pressure was lower than 7.62 NATO.

The only problem I have is a slight overheating problem when shooting long sustained bursts with my 2A1.

Question: Did anyone ever tell you if you fired commercial 30-06 in your Springfield 03-A3 you rifle would blow up? The .308-7.62 is a 30-06 case shortened 1/2 inch, gee I wonder why the M1 below didn't blow up.
