New bolt knob for 12FV

I really don’t like the round ball bolt knob. I mounted the bolt handle in my four jaw chuck in the lathe and turned it down to a shaft. The bolt knob is incredibly hard. Carbide cutters were needed.

Once that was done, an aluminum knob was turned and JB Welded to the handle......more beta!

Very nice job! I have done several Axis handles by hand with a hacksaw/file/grinder and most of them had some sort of void in the casting exposed by me. Did you see any evidence of that when taking yours down?

No voids.....I started by trying to cut excess metal from the knob. Hack saw blade wouldn’t even scratch the knob! Next I tried grinding with a 60 grit belt on my belt grinder....took too long.

in the lathe, I tried drilling the bolt knob so I could use an Center in the tail stock. Even solid carbide wouldn’t touch it. This is some hard stuff.

Even in the lathe, I needed to take very shallow cuts with carbide cutter. Took quite a while to turn it down to 5/16”

ive done this many times on Remington bolt and the cut like butter.......much softer metal.

Very nice custom work! I'm not fortunate enough to have a lathe, so I bought a tactical bolt handle from Savage. $35 if I recall right. Not nearly as pretty, but does improve the bolt lift for bench shooting.

To those withour the tools or time, Just buy the Savage tactical from Gun Shack...45 bucks and it's done.

How did you hold the bolt handle in the lathe so you were able to turn it down? Did you use a jig? pics

I did my own too.

I cut it just before the ball.
Added a piece of steel in between to make it longer and changed some angles to my liking.
Did some hot ass metal melting (welding).
Some spray paint.
It's as strong as a 1 piece bolt.
And way more intuitive.

Ok. I'll try to mount the handle in the 4 jaw and see how it goes. I made a jig for my Remington 700 bolt. It lets me turn down the bolt knob and thread it on the mill. I saw it on you tube and decided to try it. Works really good. Maybe I can make one for the Savage bolt.

Now THAT is slick! But the metal on that Savage is hard as diamonds. I'm not sure that cutter would even scratch it. Let us know if you try it .

Thanks. You were 100% right, the metal on that Savage bolt knob is hard as can be. That cutter couldn't even put a scratch on it. I have to look into a carbide tipped annular cutter. The only thing is, I'm sure for price of the cutter, I bet I could buy a few bolt tactical bolt handles.
