I see savage is announcing allot of changes on the front page of this site. Pretty generic though. Wish they would announce and bolt action in this caliber! I hate when they announce stuff and don't see it for months down the road. My CC is ready to charge ahead. Anyone going to get one of the AR's in this caliber? Was considering just buying an upper from someone but the Recon for $1249 keeps calling my name. Would guess street price will be around $1000 or a little less.

Knew this was coming. 100 gr bullet from federal for the Valkyrie.

That article is two and a half months old. The 100gr Fusion was changed to 90gr by Federal.

Thanks for pointing that out. Still figure they will come out with a 100 gr bullet down the road.

I would agree about the eventual availability. Sierra will be releasing a 95gr SMK (0.600 G1 BC) soon so that's a start. However, I think that bullets will start to be at the edge of the ability of a 1:7 twist rate being able to stabilize them in all conditions. Valkyrie barrel/rifle makers are going to have to consider going to a faster twist rate like 1:6.5 or 1:6, possibly at the expense of the ability to shoot the thinner skinned varmint bullets well. That's just my opinion, though.

Am probably getting both AR and bolt rifle for this caliber. For the AR, 1:7 should be fine but bolt will need 1:6 for the heavier bullets. That's provided 100 or 105 gr bullets are made. They may not want to get into 243 territory but this caliber may just destroy other calibers if what's being posted about ballistics is true. Thought about going back to 6.5CM but since this came out, will be going 224 route instead. Be nice if savage would release the recon before SHOT show. My CC is standing by.

I have the Savage 224 Valkyrie. Decided to give it a shot. Shot it yesterday for the first time. It was AWESOME! After I got zeroed, I ran her out to 1120 yards with no problem with a 8mph 2o'clock wind. It was fun to shoot, that is why i bought it, little recoil, and you can see hits at distance. I used my 6.5 creedmoor data as a guide. It was pretty much spot on with the creedmoor, a little better at some distances than others. I was shooting Federal 90 grain. Overall very very fun!!!!

Can you post your specs on your AR? Pics would be nice too. Shooting steel? Issues spotting impacts? Am waiting on more vendors to jump in building uppers and bolt rifles. Haven’t decided which way I want to go. That’s for the update.

It is the Savage 22939 model, 18 inch barrel, !:7 twist, Vortex PST Gen 2 Viper 5-25x50, 90 grain federal. I have swapped the UBR for the PST stock, that is just me because I like the PST the best. Yes, shooting steel and no issue spotting impact unless of course the mirage is terrible, but that is an environmental factor. Having a blast with this rifle. Will test it out in the near future with an Omega suppressor after a couple more hundred rounds.

Why did you go with that model when savage sells the hunter for less money?

it was available and i like it. shoots awesome. this past weekend shot 930 yards, 8-12 mph winds, held 3.25 moa with the 224 and 4.75 with the 6.5 creedmoor. repeated the test with the 224 vs my buddies 6.5 creedmoor and overall from 500 to 800 the 224 was within 4 inches for elevation and wind compared to his creedmoor, and what was really interesting from 800 to 930 the 224 wind holds were less than his creedmoor. bottom line, this Valkyrie was tacking with the creedmoor. Very fun to shoot. Plan to do it again this upcoming weekend.
