I just picked up a 12 gauge model B, and I am trying to find out how old it is. It does not have an engraving on the bottom, but it does have engravings on both sides with the word Fox on them. It has a pistol grip, but does not have a cap on bottom of grip. In multiple places on the reciver, foregrip, and barrel there is a D with a circle around it and the letters D E without a circle. One side of the barrel has (Proof Tested 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch Chamber) the other side has (Fox Savage Arms Corporation Model B Utica NY Made in USA). The real confusion for me is it has a serial number on it. The reason I am confused is because I thought serial numbers didn't start until about 1968, and they stopped making these guns in Utica around 1946. The serial is crude and in a broken line. Did they put serial numbers on these guns before they moved production?

I forgot to mention it has 2 triggers, and a 30 inch barrel. I did look at the serial number sticky at the top of this section, and all thoes numbers are 1 digit longer than mine. My serial number is a letter and 5 digits.

Info on the older Savage-Fox shotguns is pretty hard to come by unfortunately. I have some data I compiled from catalogs, but I only have back to the early 1960's which isn't going to help you any.

As for the serial number, a lot of manufacturers voluntarily put serial numbers on their guns prior to 1968. In 1968 they became mandatory with the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968.

The D with a circle around it is likely just an assembler or inspectors mark. The DE without a circle I couldn't say as. In the mid 1960's they offered a Model B DE (short for Deluxe) for a couple years, but no clue if such a model existed in the earlier Utica days.
