Savage VT11 barrel removal issue

I have a VT11 in .308 varmint barrel, my question is that this barrel does not have the squared grip notches to fit a standard Savage barrel nut wrench . The one on mine is smooth. How do I get this one off as I plan on replacing the barrel and the smooth nut with the notched type ?:help:

Sharp Shooter Supply makes a wrench to get it off...or you can cut and cold chisel it to death...

Thanks for the tips. The pipe wrench was a good idea but I think I'll just get the correct wrench from SSS. This is the first time I had heard of SSS , they have some nice stocks. It would be nice if someone made an LVT stock in walnut instead of the laminate. I like the old school look and feel of natural wood not the layered glued stuff.

In another note you might need to purchase the correct equipment to align the recoil lug. Look at the bottom of receiver face to see if it's notched.

Well I would go with the pipe wrench - I did and it worked perfectly.

If that does not do it you are going to have to cut it anyway (carefully)

Have to look up the SSS tool, but getting anything to grip other than a pipe wrench is ?

I did, some of those nuts are very stuck on. The harder you grip a nut, you then start to tighten it to the already stuck threads.

That's why a pipe wrench works is it digs in but does not grip straight down.

The NSS wrench is nice as it has 1/2 inch cutouts you can use for a torque wrench or a breaker bar (I did indeed have to extend one bugger of a nut, it was a segmented one). Wrench, breaker bar and my hefty weight on off it came (leverage and weight, a great combo)

You will want a real nut anyway, save the money, put it into a segmented nut and the wrench for it and don't look back.

I use the smooth one as a spare barrel protector.
