Two years ago I purchased a Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter XP package rifle from one of the big box outdoors stores. Tupperware stock, Nikon ProStaff scope, etc. I like the gun and want to upgrade the stock to a Boyds.

My gunsmith (who I haven't been able to reach for a year and a half) had a "modern scout" project he was working on back then based on a Savage rifle. He had purchased a bottom metal that enabled him to mate a metal magazine/catch/trigger guard assembly with the action he had, which was much better than the odd plastic-bottomed magazine he and I's guns both come with.

This is apparently the part he used, but I can't reach the link. Copying here in case someone knows what it is.

Basically I'm looking to put my 11 in a Boyd's stock and I need a bottom metal for it. The existing gun has that molded in "bottom metal." I want a detachable magazine like it already has, but I'd rather it be the nicer metal one he was using above instead of the annoying plastic thing. The mag and all was metal and it had a grooved T-shaped catch instead of the plastic tab. Worked well.

Anyone with knowledge of these rifles know what piece I need to get and where I can get it? I'm just going to do it myself.

EDIT: This is what it looked like...http://www.gunco.net/forums/attachments/35815d1369277411-savage-110-dbm-conversion-sav10pc4.jpg

That looks like a factory savage bottom. I think PTG makes one, or it may be for a detachable mag. Depending on the age of your rifle, you need to verify action screw spacing before you spend your money.

Actually, looking at that pic again, what is the button in front of the trigger guard? The release is by the front action screw.

That’s standard bottom bolt release bottom metal
I got mine straight from savage.
I have the list but can’t post pics for some reason.
Google savage bottom metal list and it will be in the pictures.
Available in stainless, blued and black and in short and long action.

Which boyds stock are you wanting to put on the rifle? They do vary on what you have to get or do to them depending on which one. The bottom metal in the picture looks like the metal that I put on my Pro Varmint. Even has the same release lever for the mag.

I've seen photos of the older 11/111 (not sure how old though) where he took out the bottom metal from the synthetic and transferred it to his Pro varmint. The mag housing is the key, if its molded in then no joy, but if you can pull it out, you may be able to swap it straight over.

Thank you everyone.

SageRatShooter, it's all molded in, and I want to use the Classic stock.

I found this article where the guy seems to do exactly what I'm looking to do - same rifle basically. https://landngroove.wordpress.com/2015/01/14/savage-trophy-hunter-xp-260-rem-update/

The Boyds site seems to be "screwed up" right now, so I can't look at the stock you are wanting and what Boyds says is needed for their bottom metal. The bottom line is: you are on the right path, there are a bunch of us that have put Boyds on our rifles.

Once you can see what they say you have to have (most likely the bottom metal for Savage wood stocks"... Just call Savage directly and someone there will get you hooked up with what you need. My bottom metal ran me $150 shipping included... (mag housing, trigger guard, and the metal bottom conversion piece for the mag) The mag bottom just pops off (the plastic one) and you then just put the metal one back on the mag and slap it in.

Cheers,

I did something similar originally with my 260
that list I mentioned has the savage part numbers.

Thank you! I'll call Savage sometime - their 800 number seemed goofed up and wouldn't take menu options. I'll try again later.
