View Full Version : Savage 10BA Stealth caliber choice?

I'm thinking very seriously about picking up a 10BA Stealth as my next gun but I'm undecided on the caliber choice. I was originally thinking to go with the .308 but I've read so much good about the 6.5 Creedmoor that I'm wondering if I should go that route?

Just some personal factors to consider:

I'm brand new to long range shooting.

This is going to be a "fun gun" not a competition rifle.

It will be strictly for shooting paper or iron targets. No hunting.

For the foreseeable future I'll be using factory loaded ammo.

The longest range I have access to is 600 yards, but a lot of my shooting will probably be at a closer 300 yard range.

So, is target ammo noticeably cheaper for one or the other? Will I notice much difference between the two at 600 yards and less? With a moderate amount of shooting (say 500-1000 rounds per year) will I like notice much difference in barrel wear?

Thanks for any answers or insights you can offer! [emoji4]

Accurate barrel life for the 6.5 Creedmoor is roughly between 2,500 to 4,500 rounds depending on how hot the barrel gets and what kind of powder is being burned in it.

308 Win. barrel life is anywhere from 4,000 to 7,500 rounds. Again all depending.

Factory ammo for both is very good especially Match ammo. On average the top tier Match ammo for both will be similar in price, tho the 6.5 CM is usually a few bucks cheaper per box.

308 Win kicks more than the 6.5 CM and recoil always handicaps pure accuracy. Not to mention shooter fatigue.

If you don't mind the recoil of the 308win then that's what I always recommend because barrel life is very important for me. I shoot 3,000 to 4,000 centerfire round every year so I rotate several different rifles to make them last.

I bought a Savage 10T in 6.5 Creedmoor at Cabela's on sale was $650.00 for $550.00 I haven't shot it yet been doing to much deer hunting, but from what I have read and ben told it holds it's energy longer than a .308 for distance shooting.
I like to target shoot but I also bought it to hunt with my first choice was the Savage 10BA in 6.5 Creedmoor but Gander Mountain sold the one that was discounted 30% before I got the email.

Good luck with your choice I think either caliber will do you fine.

You certainly won't be disappointed with the creedmoor!! Even though people are calling it a fad or the 6.5 cool kid! I have been hunting with the 6.5 for three years now. I will probably never use anything else unless I am in the brush, and then I will break out the trusty thudythudy!!
